Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge Kicks Off

MSUM’s Physical Plant, Student Senate Sustainability Committee and Sustainable Students Association (SSA) is hosting a plastic bag recycling competition on campus now through April 2023. You can get involved by recycling plastic bags in bins located across campus. The challenge’s target is 500 pounds—approximately 40,500 plastic bags.

If MSUM reaches its goal, the university will receive a free bench made of recycled plastic, in addition to removing hundreds of pounds of waste from landfills.

Accepted materials include:

  • Grocery bags
  • Bread bags
  • Case overwrap (from bulk beverages)
  • Dry cleaning bags
  • Newspaper sleeves
  • Ice bags
  • Wood pellet bags
  • Ziplock and other re-sealable bags
  • Produce bags
  • Bubble wrap and packaging air pillows
  • Salt bags
  • Cereal bags

It is important to note all materials must be clean, dry and free of food residue.

Bins for plastic bag collection are located on the first floors of Hagen, Neumaier and MacLean Halls, as well as the CMU and Center for the Arts.
Everyone is encouraged to continue recycling plastic bags after the challenge concludes in April. Local grocery stores have plastic bag drop-off bins to recycle bags.
