MSUM student named 2022 Goldwater Scholar

MaryJo Nelson has been named a 2022 Goldwater Scholar. The Scholarship Program honoring Senator Barry Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics. The Goldwater Scholarship is the preeminent undergraduate award of its type in these fields. From an estimated pool of over 5,000 college sophomores and juniors, 1242 natural science, engineering and mathematics students were nominated by 433 academic institutions to compete for the 2022 Goldwater scholarships.

MaryJo is uniquely talented as well as fully committed to her career in science. She has taken the lead on a variety of projects at our Regional Science Center field station and presented work at professional conferences. And as a Bioscience and Film Production double major, MaryJo also uses her creative talents as a filmmaker to create engaging documentary films that make the science accessible to those outside of the conference setting.

MSUM has a strong history of Goldwater Scholars- including Dr. Heather Cegla (B.S. Physics) who is this year’s Keynote Speaker at the Student Academic Conference.
