Sign Up for a Community of Practice for Faculty Development

The Faculty Development Committee would like to propose the following Communities of Practice for Fall 2021. These groups would meet either online via Zoom or in person, depending upon the group’s decision.  A facilitator will be determined either before or at the first meeting. At the end of the form you can indicate any groups you are interested in facilitating. If the group decides on a book or other reading, they will contact Brittney Goodman @ facdev@mnstate.edu with their needs. There are already some sets of books that may be suitable for some of the groups in the Faculty Development Center. It  is anticipated that groups would start meeting, once calendars are compared, beginning in mid-October and could continue through January. Depending upon the group, they may continue to meet in Spring. If other ideas for areas of interest come up, we will begin another set of COPs in February 2022.

What is a Community of Practice?

Communities of Practice are groups of faculty and others that meet to discuss an area of common interest – including ideas and practices involving pedagogy, theory, and applied knowledge.  These groups meet usually 6 times a semester. This activity supports faculty and other professionals who share similar interests and want to gather and discuss themes, goals, and outcomes using a variety of resources and approaches.

What’s the time commitment?

It depends on the interest-level and goals of the group, but, on average, a Community of Practice group meets 6 times a semester, usually for hour-long meetings.

What happens at the end?

The group will turn in a brief report of what they learned to the Faculty Development Committee, and may be asked to share ideas with the rest of the faculty community at a later date.

What are the topics this semester?

They are: Social Justice Pedagogy; Manuscript Writing and Sharing for Publication; Pre-Tenure Mentoring; 18-Online Faculty Discussion; HyFlex Teaching & Learning; Retaining Students of Color; and Open Education Resources (OERs).  Depending upon interest, not all may be offered.

To indicate interest in a Community of Practice, simply fill out this form and check next to any COPs that are of interest to you.
