Mask requirement to begin on campus on Monday, August 16, 2021
COVID-19 transmissions in Clay County have reached the Substantial risk level. Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control, Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota State System Office requires masking for indoor public settings at this time.
Effective Monday, August 16, 2021, MSUM requires all students, faculty, staff, and visitors to wear a mask in indoor public settings. Masking outdoors is not required. The masking requirement will remain in place until further notice and Clay County is in the Low or Moderate transmission level for 14 consecutive days. The MSUM Emergency Management Teams continue to monitor Clay County transmission rates.

Masking is required for indoor public settings when on campus or university-owned property. Exceptions to this requirement:
- You’re outdoors.
- You’re eating or drinking, provided appropriate physical distancing can be observed.
- You’re in your apartment or residence hall room.
- You’re in an office, study area, or other private space where it’s unlikely you’ll encounter others.
- You’re alone in a university-owned motor vehicle.
- You have an underlying medical/health condition. Please complete the Request for Accommodations form.
- You’re in an internship, clinical or other experiential learning setting, where you should follow the host site guidelines.
- You’re speaking or performing, provided appropriate physical distancing (12-feet) can be maintained between the speaker or performer and the audience or spectators.
Masking tips
- Wash your cloth mask frequently.
- Replace your disposable mask daily.
- Bring your mask(s) from home. You can also buy them locally. Disposable masks will be available at various offices across campus.
- We’re in this together! Wear a mask to protect yourself and others from being infected with COVID-19.
- Stay home if you don’t feel well.
- Complete the Student COVID-19 Reporting Form or the Employee COVID-19 Reporting Form if you tested positive or have been in contact with someone who has.
- Use clear masks when possible, in consideration of those with hearing loss or other conditions that limit communication while wearing a cloth or other mask.
What this means for you
Learning: Wear masks in indoor public settings, including classrooms, study spaces, hallways and public areas of both academic and non-academic buildings.
Living: Wear masks in campus residence halls and apartment common areas. They may be removed in your room or apartment.
Working: Wear a mask in indoor public settings such as classrooms, common work areas, conference rooms, meetings and any indoor area where you are likely to encounter others. Exceptions are your personal office, work area or other private space.
Gathering: Wear a mask for events for all indoor public settings. There are no capacity or distancing requirements. No masks are required outdoors. However, masks are encouraged for larger capacity outdoor events.
