MSUM Sponsors Local Juneteenth Freedom Celebration
Juneteenth is an American holiday that is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States and the freedom that was granted to African Americans. This day originated in Galveston, Texas in 1865 and has since spread to all states and most cities. In addition to celebrating the end of slavery and freedom, many celebrations highlight education and the achievements of Blacks in America. Today, we find ourselves about one year post the murder of George Floyd, whose death sent a similar feeling of the public lynchings that took place throughout our US history. The work is not done, we have not arrived, we must strive forward and all do our part. It is on all of us, yes that means you too!
Please join us in celebrating this community event right here, on June 19 at Lindenwood Park from 12PM-7PM. Faith4Hope Scholarships has planned a daylong, community-led celebration that features music, dance and other performances, a host of youth and family activities, historical and cultural booths and vendors offering an array of food and merchandise.
MSUM’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion is honored to be one of the program sponsors.
