Advertising major Caitlin Wilts and advertising/PR major Amber Westereng are content specialists for MSUM’s Marketing & Communications office. By managing social media, interviewing students, faculty, and alumni, and collaborating with others on creative projects, they help share stories of what it means to be a member of the Dragon family.

As MSUM transitioned to online classes and closed most of the campus for the remainder of the semester, Westereng says the marketing department’s job is to make sure students are still informed. “I’m helping wherever I can. Currently, I am sharing messages on social media and uplifting students during this time.”

As with any job, there are opportunities for new challenges. Wilts says her on-campus work experience has allowed her to professionally and personally grow when working with a team, especially during times of change.

Both Westereng and Wilts have learned skills from their on-campus employment they will take with them long after graduation. “Working on campus is great. It is convenient when you are going to school in the same place. You also get to meet new people and build relationships. I have had the opportunity to work with some members on the cabinet, including President Anne,” Westereng said.

Wilts started her position with the marketing team this semester, and says, “I’ve gained more curiosity and desire to learn about others’ passions and why they do what they do. I’ve also developed more self-confidence interviewing people I may not know; I now see each of my interviews as an opportunity to create new connections!”

In addition to employing content specialists, the Marketing Office also hires 20-25 students each semester, including graphic designers, videographers, animators, photographers, printing assistants and office help. If you’re interested in joining the team, email marketingteam@mnstate.edu.
