Dille Lecture by Dr. Ellen Brisch

Dr. Ellen Brisch, a professor in Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Biosciences Department, will present a free public lecture on “Play Day – Teaching Complex Biological Processes by Learning from Students” on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. in Langseth Hall 118.
Brisch’s presentation is an honor given as the recipient of this year’s Dille Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award. An award presentation will proceed her talk with refreshments provided after the lecture.
Brisch will be talking about the more difficult concepts from her classes and how students have helped her develop “plays” to act out the processes. Concepts she will be talking about include Gastrulation – the most important day of your life, and Oxidative Phosphorylation – how mitochondria make ATP. She’ll also talk about the lessons she’s learned from students on how to be a better, more effective teacher.
Dr. Brisch earned a Ph.D. in cell biology, physiology and biochemistry. She also received a postdoctoral fellowship in genetics and molecular biology.
Each year, the Dille Fund for Excellence Committee and the President select one MSUM faculty member to receive the Dille Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award. The award is one of the highest honors that MSUM grants to the faculty.
