Sounds of Spirit Lake series opens with Park Rapids Community Band, Park Rapids Enterprise: “Menahga’s outdoor concert series, The Sounds of Spirit Lake, opens for its 2017 season on Friday, June 30 … Trumpet soloist Dr. Tom Strait will join the Park Rapids Area Community Band in two feature pieces. Strait is currently in his eighth year on the faculty at Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM).”

Kings head coach Dave Joerger swings by Minn. basketball team’s workout, USA Today High School Sports: “Besides sleepy eyes, you never know what you will see at an early-morning summer workout. Or who you will see. For one high school basketball team in Minnesota, it could be an NBA head coach who walks into the gym. Sacramento Kings head coach Dave Joerger grew up in Staples, Minn., and stayed in-state to play basketball at Concordia College and then Minnesota State Moorhead. This week, he is visiting his father, who lives in Henning, Minn.”

NSIC set to adjust league scholarship limits to match Division II standards, InForum: “Minnesota State Moorhead recently reached the summit for Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference football scholarships. Now, there will be a higher peak. The NSIC board of directors recently voted to adhere to NCAA Division II parameters for scholarships. That means the football maximum will be increased to 36 for the 2018-19 school year. The current league maximum is 28.”

Wieck elevated to associate head coach for Dragons men’s basketball, InForum: “Justin Wieck has been elevated to associate head coach for the Minnesota State Moorhead men’s basketball team, athletic director Doug Peters announced Thursday, July 6.”

Former Dragons basketball scoring whiz Beeson joins NSIC Hall of Fame, InForum: “Former Minnesota State Moorhead men’s basketball standout Brett Beeson was inducted into the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Hall of Fame on Tuesday, July 11.”

Former Bison women’s basketball coach Ruley hired as an athletic fundraiser for MSUM, InForum: “After nearly four decades at North Dakota State, former Bison head women’s basketball coach Amy Ruley is headed across the Red River. Ruley has been hired by the Minnesota State University Moorhead Alumni Foundation to be its new Senior Director of Development for Athletics.”

Chamber announces 2017-18 leadership class, InForum: “The local Chamber of Commerce has announced its 2017-18 Leadership Fargo Moorhead class,” including Holly Hoeschen of MSUM. Congratulations!

Former wrestler turned UFC fighter gears up for biggest fight yet, WDAY: “Tim Johnson is a name familiar to many in the area. Johnson rose to prominence in the Red River Valley as a wrestler at MSUM. Now, he’s a UFC fighter getting ready for his biggest bout yet.”

Local Kurdish leader pens memoir: ‘My Journey to America’, WDAY: “When Newzad Brifki was 4 years old, he and his family were forced to flee Iraqi Kurdistan after it was attacked with chemical weapons while under the rule of Saddam Hussein. Brifki spent the next four years of his life in a refugee camp in Turkey, before coming to the U.S. in 1992 … Brifki graduated from Moorhead High School in 2003 and went on to earn a degree in business administration from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2008.”

Peace by piece: Public art at Fargo park brings cultures together, WDAY: “Brick sculptures and mosaics are two different types of art, but they have one major thing in common: they’re made up of pieces in all shapes and sizes that contribute to the whole … (MSUM professor Brad) Bachmeier, who is one of 19 brick sculptors in the United States, led the design of the lizard-shaped brick sculpture and archway — but not before doing his homework.”
