Minnesota State announces finalists for chancellor

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees will consider three candidates for appointment as the next Minnesota State chancellor.  Those under consideration are as follows: 

Michael Martin is chancellor emeritus and senior fellow at the Colorado State University System, where he served as chancellor from 2012 to 2015. Previously, he served Louisiana State University as chancellor, New Mexico State University as president, and the University of Florida as vice president for agriculture and natural resources. He has served the University of Minnesota in several capacities including vice president for agricultural policy, dean of the College of Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Sciences, and acting director and associate director of the Agricultural Experiment Station. He holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and a doctorate from the University of Minnesota.

Keith Miller is president emeritus of Lock Haven University (PA), where he served as president from 2004 to 2010. He also served Virginia State University as president, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh as provost and as vice chancellor, Niagara University as dean of the College of Business Administration, Quinnipiac University (CT) as associate dean of the School of Business, and Farleigh Dickinson University (NJ) as the MBA program director, as the interim campus chairperson of the management and marketing department, and as an assistant professor. He holds a bachelor’s degree, a master’s, and a doctoral degree from the University of Arizona.

Cathy Sandeen has served as the chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Colleges and the University of Wisconsin-Extension since 2014. Previously, she served the American Council on Education as vice president of educational attainment and innovation, the University of California Los Angeles as dean of Continuing Education UCLA Extension, the University of California Santa Cruz as vice provost and dean of University Extension and Summer Session, and the University of California San Francisco in numerous capacities. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Humboldt State University, master’s degrees from San Francisco State University and the University of California Los Angeles, and a doctorate from the University of Utah.

On February 7 and 8, the candidates will interview with members of the Board of Trustees, college and university presidents, and members of the chancellor’s cabinet, and will participate in an employee forum.  All campus faculty, staff, and students throughout Minnesota may participate via WebEx.

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees will review feedback received from interview participants and, after deliberation, will consider the appointment of a preferred candidate on Thursday, February 9 at 10:00 a.m.  The new chancellor term will begin August 1.

Steven Rosenstone has served as Minnesota State chancellor since 2011 and announced his intention to retire upon completion of his contract on July 31, 2017.
