American Indian Heritage Month Events: Nov. 1-4

Join us for this week’s American Indian Heritage Month events.

Tuesday, Nov. 1

  • 12:00 PM   Opening Pipe Ceremony (Library Porch)
    • Laidman “JR” Fox, Spiritual Advisor from Spirit Lake Nation, will conduct a traditional pipe ceremony to welcome in American Indian Heritage Month on the MSUM campus.
  • 2:00 PM     Construction of Sweat Lodge (next to Sustainability House, 9th Ave. S & 11th Street S.)
  • 6:00 PM     Sweat Lodge Ceremony (next to Sustainability House, 9th Ave. S & 11th Street S.)
    • Students, staff and faculty are welcome to participate. Appropriate apparel for sweat: basketball style shorts or long cotton skirt and loose fitting t-shirt. Come prepared with a towel and water bottle.

Wednesday, Nov. 2

  • 3:00 PM     Diversity Dialogue: Traditional Native American Practices, facilitated by Laidman “JR” Fox (Intercultural Center, CMU 121)
  • 6:00 PM     Drum and Song (CMU 203/Campus Mall)
    • Listen and learn traditional songs.
Thursday, Nov. 3
  • 6:00 PM     Sweat Lodge Ceremony (next to Sustainability House, 9th Ave. S & 11th Street S.)
Friday, Nov. 4
  • 12:00 PM     Dakota lapi Kin – Dakota Language Revitalization facilitated by Vanessa Goodthunder (King Hall 110)
    • Vanessa Goodthunder, member of the Lower Sioux Indian Community, believes that language can be used to heal from historical trauma and has dedicated her life to learning and teaching the Dakota language.
