Governor proposes additional $21m for MnSCU
Governor Mark Dayton yesterday presented his supplemental budget recommendation that includes $21 million additional base funding for Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. For MSUM, that would amount to $1,052,000.
“The Governor’s supplemental appropriation would be an important step in helping us balance our institutional budget,” said President Anne Blackhurst. “The Governor’s proposal requires approval by the House and Senate, of course, so we won’t know if the funding will be available until the end of the legislative session. In either case, budget reductions will be needed. I am grateful that the Governor agrees that this is an appropriate use of a portion of our state’s $900 million surplus.”
“Minnesota State Colleges and Universities is the most powerful, effective, and efficient way to address the biggest threats to the economic vitality of our state: Minnesota’s racial and economic disparities and the pressing need for talent,” said Steven Rosenstone, chancellor. “If the legislature enacts the Governor’s recommendation, we will be able to avoid $21 million in cuts that would undermine our ability to turn out the talent Minnesota needs to reduce racial and economic disparities and ensure that communities across the state prosper. We deeply appreciate the Governor’s leadership and his continued support, and we look forward to continued discussions as the session unfolds.”
