Coming of Age Reception- featuring Dr. Steve Hoffbeck’s 1968 presentation
Tuesday, April 7, 6-7 p.m.
Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County, Hjemkomst Center, 202 1st Ave N, Moorhead, MN 56560

Coming of Age: The 1968 Generation exhibit features a time when there was upheaval, rebellion and a variety of challenging social issues at stake. HCS welcomes this MNHS traveling exhibit with Dr. Steve Hoffbeck, a history professor at MSU Moorhead. Hoffbeck will give his illustrated presentation on 1968: The Most Powerful Year in a Turbulent Decade. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.

Hoffbeck will relate the stories of how Minnesotans coped with the powerful events of 1968- a time of war in Vietnam, violence in the streets and assassinations of U.S. leaders (Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert F. Kennedy), and a presidential election- in a brief, forty-five minute talk. A question and answer session will follow the presentation.

More than 68,000 Minnesota men and women went off to serve in the Vietnam Conflict—-and over one-thousand of them perished in combat and forty-three others were missing in action. Hoffbeck provides insights into understanding the war and will share stories of Minnesotans who were deeply affected by the war and its legacies.

Dr. Steve Hoffbeck is a professor of history at Minnesota State University Moorhead. Specializing in the regional history of the Upper Midwest, Hoffbeck has written about topics such as the history of aviation, baseball, street pavements, and fishing. A book that he wrote about farming in Minnesota, entitled The Haymakers: A Chronicle of Five Farm Families, won a Minnesota Book Award in 2001. The Haymakers has become a book beloved by its readers for its insights into the trials and joys of farming.
