The Library seeks graduate student to act as evening supervisor
Position Description
Position Title: MSUM Library Evening Student Supervisor Position Purpose:
The Evening Student Supervisor is responsible for the student staff and services at the Circulation/Reserves Desk during evening hours. The Evening Student Supervisor provides circulation support; issues/renews library cards; assists patrons; processes electronic reserves, and checks in/out and renews library materials. Assistance is provided to library patrons in the basic use of the tools that provide access to the collections. The Evening Student Supervisor enforces library policies and resolves routine complaints; assists with opening/closing library; directs projects from library faculty/staff; services photocopiers, assists with student payroll and helps with electronic course reserves. Hours: Evenings, Sunday-Thursdays. Some day time hours required,
- weekly meeting with Public Services Librarian or Circulation Hours may vary during summer and holiday periods. Flexibility in scheduling is essential. The start date for this position is negotiable but the employee will need to begin work sometime between April 15th and May 1st, 2015.
Reports to:
The Evening Student Supervisor will report to the Library Chair. Definite work objectives are set, but the methods of performing tasks are frequently left to the judgment of the employee with the Public Services Librarian and the Circulation Technician providing technical training, occasional supervision or advice. The Evening Student Supervisor will oversee the work of the Student Assistants in the evenings.
% if time Examples of Typical Duties and Responsibilities
70 Performs all activities associated with daily circulation/library operations:
- Supervises Student Assistants
- Oversees and assist with operations of service counters (Circulations/Reserves).
- Supervises as part of regular evening duties – stack maintenance and re- shelving of library material, sorting and re-shelving returned
- Resolves patron problems related to
- Handles equipment malfunctions, as warranted (photocopiers, microfiche copier, microfilm readers, )
- Backup book check-in/discharging.
- Assists with closing and securing library
20 Performs other duties such as:
- Assists with course reserves.
- Assists with search This may necessitate going to the stacks on a limited basis.
- Assists with student payroll (bi-weekly).
- Supervises or works on projects from library faculty/staff. All assigned projects go through the Library Chair who will relay them to Evening Student These projects can include bulletin boards, library statistics, specific staff projects, and other misc. projects.
10 Performs other duties as assigned.
Employment Standards:
- Must be currently enrolled in an MSUM graduate program and remain in good standing.
- Flexibility in work schedule is essential.
- Must be reliable and capable of making good decisions.
- Demonstrated strong organizational and interpersonal skills and ability to work with sensitive and confidential information in an appropriate manner.
- Ability to work independently as well as to work with others in a team environment;
- Ability to organize and prioritize work for self and others;
- Ability to recognize, interpret and resolve complex problems;
- Ability to work quickly and accurately and to meet deadlines;
- Ability to adapt to changes in priorities and workflow.
- Ability to use a personal computer with a Windows operation system for standard Office applications such as word processing, spreadsheet design, email and web browsing.
- Ability to lift books and move book trucks.
- Effective oral and written communication skills and a strong command of English.
- There is the expectation that these workers will not leave the desk for extended periods of time.
