Straw Hat Players Enters 51st Season

Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Straw Hat Players Summer Theatre opens its 51th season with the musical Suds, a PG-13-rated revue with hits like “Respect” and “Chapel of Love.” The show runs from June 3 to 6 on the Gaede Stage.

The season continues with the PG-13-rated drama Doubt, the winner of a 2005 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award. The production will showcase local actress and executive director of Theatre B, Carrie Wintersteen. The play tells the 1964 story of a priest whose behavior has aroused suspicion. Doubt runs from June 10 to 13 on the Gaede Stage.

The big musical Funny Girl opens June 17 on the Hansen Theatre stage. Funny Girl is a semi-biography based on the life and career of Fanny Brice. The musical is loaded with hits like “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “People.” The show continues through June 20.

The Neil Simon play, Barefoot in the Park, a romantic comedy rated PG-13, opens June 24 and runs through June 27 on the Gaede Stage. Two newlyweds with completely different personalities survive a honeymoon and a visit from a mother-in-law, who they set up with a neighbor living in the attic.

The final show of the season is the hit musical Fiddler on the Roof. The show runs July 10, 11 and July 15 to 18 on the Hansen Theatre stage. Fiddler follows Tevye, a poor Jewish dairyman, through life with four daughters amid the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. The musical has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth and honesty, and is filled with well-known songs like “Sunrise, Sunset,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” and “Matchmaker.”

All shows start at 7:30 p.m. Signed performances for the hearing impaired are Wednesdays for all shows. Tickets are available for the entire season at a discount, and for individual shows.
