The Gendered Economy offered as online course this summer
Economics 340: The Gendered Economy (LASC 9) offered online this summer (May 21 to June 17).
Despite the grand American narrative of expanding freedom, economic and political opportunity in the United States has never been equally available to all. Race, ethnicity, and gender have played and continue to play an important yet often invidious role in identifying who is eligible for political citizenship and who enjoys the full benefits of economic citizenship.
In this course, we will:
• investigate how gender specifically has influenced access to economic resources, opportunities, and institutions in the United States;
• examine the family unit as an economic institution and the changing roles of women and men within the family;
• explore how public policy affects paid work and family formation decisions;
• consider how the expanding field of feminist economics challenges orthodox assumptions, analysis, and policy prescriptions.
The course has no prerequisite and counts as a restricted elective for majors and minors in Economics and in Women’s & Gender Studies.
