How the Comstock Memorial Union Got Its Name
Have you ever wondered how the CMU got its name? Well, we can give you the inside scoop on how the student union came to be and how it got its name!
The CMU’s story begins in the 1950s as the campus began considering the need for a student union. However, it was not until students began voicing the need for a student union and led the charge to gain approval of the state legislature to charge a $5.00 fee per quarter in 1961 to fund the building. In 1964 the architectural planning began on this immense project and construction started in February of 1966.
Finally on April 24, 1967 the Comstock Memorial Union opened to the public at 10am with a grand opening ceremony. More than 3,000 students and community members toured the building in its first week of operation.
Now that you’ve heard the story of building the student union, you must be curious about how it came to be known as the CMU. The Comstock Memorial Union was named for the Comstock family of Moorhead, MN. Solomon G. Comstock was instrumental in bringing a college to Moorhead and even donated 6 acres of land for the campus!
The CMU is continually being renovated and updated to meet the ever-changing needs of MSUM students. Whether we’re installing new carpet, putting in new technology, creating new spaces for student groups or planning a remodel, we are always trying to do our best to serve the students of MSUM.
