Moorhead preparing to build to 43 feet, will be holding neighborhood meetings

On the heels of the hybrid flood outlook released by the weather service, Moorhead is going into action mode.
The City of Moorhead has 400,000 sandbags on hand, which is sufficient to construct sandbag levees to a top elevation of 43 feet. The bags are thawed and ready to deploy when needed. The expected crest range is 39 – 41 feet for Fargo-Moorhead, with a midrange projection of 40.3 feet.
The City of Moorhead is holding neighborhood meetings to continue preparations for this late spring flood event.

- Zones 1, 2, 3, and 4: 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.
- Zones 5, 6, 7, and 8: 8 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
A Flood Zone map is available at www.cityofmoorhead.com/flood. Zone boundaries established in 2010 have not changed. Technical staff will share information on the City’s overall flood preparations and answer questions from affected residents regarding elevations and other property-specific concerns. Zone leaders will be available to discuss preparations within individual neighborhood zones.
The City’s Spider sandbagging equipment will be set up and in stand-by mode in the event river projections are raised due to additional precipitation. Sandbag production can begin immediately should it become necessary.
The City of Moorhead continues to monitor flood projections and will communicate more detailed information based on future National Weather Service forecasts in the coming days. New information will be posted to www.cityofmoorhead.com/flood. Please check this website for updates. The City’s Floodline 218.299.5300 is answered during regular business hours. These hours may be extended during sandbag deployment. Of course, for any emergency matters, please call 911.
Important reminders to residents:
- All residents (riverfront or not) should direct sump pump discharge to the outside of homes and businesses.
- Riverfront properties that may need to sandbag should clear snow from their backyards to help the ground to thaw in advance of survey and sandbag placement.
