Weld Hall Time Capsule Ceremony
Weld Hall Time Capsule Ceremony– September 23, 3 pm
Last year, while renovating Weld Hall, the oldest building on its campus, Minnesota State University Moorhead workers found a time capsule filled with material from an early period in the university’s history. The zinc-and-copper box contained photographs, playbills and music programs, course descriptions and school publications describing life in and around the university in 1915. It also held copies of the Moorhead Daily News containing stories about the school and stories about the World War that had begun in Europe in 1914. One story concerned the sinking of the British liner Lusitania by a German submarine, published just a few weeks before Weld Hall was dedicated and the time capsule was placed in the building’s foundation.
On Friday, September 23, at 3PM in Glasrud Auditorium (WE 106), the University will hold a brief ceremony to place a new time capsule in the Weld Hall foundation. The ceremony will take place in Glasrud Auditorium (WE 106). The new box will contain all the materials from the original capsule along with new materials – photographs of the four living presidents of Minnesota State University Moorhead, documents concerning recent events at the University, contract copies, memorabilia, and other items. Images of all of these items will also be preserved on a University website.
In 2013 Minnesota State University will celebrate its 125th anniversary. Events to mark this milestone are currently being planned.
