Video Project pairs students with community organizations

Representatives from four local nonprofit organizations will view short films created about their organizations by student filmmakers Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. in MSUM’s Weld Auditorium. The documentaries are the sole project of an Advanced Video class led by Film Studies instructor Ray Rea.

“Advanced Video is a service-learning class that pairs shooting groups with local nonprofits,” says Rea. Students first meet with clients, then develop a written proposal, a budget, a script, a shooting schedule and location materials. They are also responsible for all pre-production, production and post-production work.

This year’s partners are PAAWS, Recovery Worship, The Arts Partnership and First Link. Past years’ clients include the Fargo Police Department, the FM Humane Society, the Fargo Bicycle Collective and the Fargo Theatre. The organizations use the videos to recruit volunteers, fundraise and build awareness.

The screening is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Ray Rea at 218.477.4621 or email him at rea@mnstate.edu.
