Steve Hoffbeck joins Dakota writing team

Steve Hoffbeck, History, has joined the writing team for Dakota Datebook, to tell stories of North Dakota’s history every day of the year. Each datebook story is about five minutes long and relates what happened on that date in the past, whether it is an anniversary of a big event, such as the establishment of Grand Forks Air Force Base in the 1950s, or a story that tells about what life was like in the past in the state of North Dakota in connection with a date on the calendar. In the month of May, Hoffbeck’s eight stories include short features on the history of the Barrels root beer stands; a U-2 spy plane at Minot Air Force Base; Max Bass and the emigration of the Dunkards; Sunday baseball games; and opium dens in Fargo. Listeners can tune in to Dakota Datebook radio features that air daily at 8:35 a.m., 3:50 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 7:50 p.m. (Central Time) on Prairie Public Radio. Those who want to read the stories and hear them on the web may find the tales at www.prairiepublic.org and then click on “Dakota Datebook.”
