Mayor Mark Voxland Proclaims March as National Athletic Training Month in Moorhead

MSUM Athletic Training students, faculty and staff attended the March 8th Moorhead City Council meeting to accept the Mayor’s proclamation. “Sports Safety is a Team Effort” is the theme of this year’s National Athletic Training Month, which is sponsored by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), a not-for-profit organization based in Dallas, Texas. The proclamation is an effort to highlight the profession of athletic training and recognize the certified athletic trainers and athletic training students in Moorhead. An athletic trainer is an expert at recognizing, treating, rehabilitating, and preventing musculoskeletal or orthopedic injuries. ATs meet qualifications set by the Board of Certification, Inc., and adhere to the requirements of Minnesota State Board of Medical Practice. ATs practice under the direction of a physician and are members of a health care profession recognized by the American Medical Association.

Athletic training has a vast reach and history in the city of Moorhead. MSUM is one of seven 4-year institutions in the state of Minnesota with a nationally accredited education program. In addition, MSUM employs 4 certified athletic trainers to provide care to the student-athletes on the intercollegiate rosters. The Moorhead school district has 2 full-time certified athletic trainers to provide services to the student-athletes at Moorhead High School. Horizon Middle School has 1 certified athletic trainer who provides care for the student-athletes. MSUM athletic training  students complete extensive clinical rotations at MSUM, Concordia College, and the above mentioned schools in the Moorhead ISD.
