MSUM offers Understanding Generational Poverty for Credit or Non-Credit

MSUM is offering a course on Understanding Generational Poverty this spring semester. The course will begin on Saturday, February 27 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm with an introduction to the history of poverty, research, and how the condition of poverty can affect learning and work. It will continue Thursday evenings, March 4 & 11, 2010 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm with an in-depth look at those topics. Participants may take it for non-credit or for one credit at the graduate or undergraduate level in Social Work, Education, or Nursing. Non-credit participants may attend on Saturday only, or attend the entire course. General, ND social work, or MN social work CEUs will be awarded upon request for non-credit participants.

This course reviews the work of researchers who are studying poverty.  Participants will learn why poverty is growing in this country and how situational and generational poverty differ. The dangers of stereotyping, underlying assumptions and how poverty affects the resources available to families will also be addressed.   Participants in the entire course will be given ample discussion and planning time to plan for implementation in their work or professional settings.

Pat Anderson, a nationally certified trainer for Dr. Ruby Payne’s “Framework for Understanding Poverty”, will be the instructor. She taught elementary students in our area and coordinated Education Services for Lakes Country Service Cooperative, Fergus Falls, Minnesota until her retirement in July 2008.  She now provides training for educators and other service providers throughout Minnesota and North Dakota as an independent consultant for Lakes Country Service Cooperative.

The registration fee includes lunch on Saturday and materials.  The cost to non-credit participants is $140.00 for the entire course or $80.00 for Saturday only.  Undergraduate students will pay $200.00 and graduate students pay $290.00.  CEU certificates are an additional $10.00.
