What to do when the TCU Library closes
As was announced earlier this semester, a budgetary decision was made by the Tri College Commissioners that the Tri College Film Library will cease operation as of the end of Fall semester, 2009. Below is some information you will need in order to access these resources as of Spring 2010.
Location and Access
For Spring 2010, MSUM’s “Instructional Video Collection” will be located on the first floor of the Livingston Lord Library and will be accessible to faculty when a librarian is on duty, Monday-Thursday, 8 am – 9 pm, and Friday 8 am – 4:45 pm, during the Spring semester. Summer accessibility is still being determined but will revolve around the Library’s hours.
Materials in the Instructional Video Collection will circulate for one week only and will have one renewal. Requests for exceptions will be made through the Media Librarian, William Kenz – kenz@mnstate.edu – 218.477.2349.
In the Spring/Summer 2009 budget reallocation, the Library had one staff position frozen. Thus, due to reduced staffing, the Library will not be “booking” materials in advance.
Video Materials at NDSU and Concordia
MSUM faculty may request items via Interlibrary Loan from NDSU and Concordia. The circulation (check-out) period will be one week and one renewal.
The Livingston Lord Library will try this one-week checkout with no booking option for Spring semester as a pilot to determine whether this will meet faculty needs. We will survey Instructional Video Collection users during the Spring to assess this model’s effectiveness and we encourage your feedback and suggestions for improving this service via consultation with the Media Librarian, William Kenz.
Collection’s Contents
For your reference, a list of titles that are currently in TCU Film Library collection with notation as to which campus is receiving specific titles is located: http://www.mnstate.edu/library/trifilms.cfm . These will go to their respective institution at the end of Fall semester 2009. The titles were divided based upon usage, with an attempt to allocate materials equally between the campuses, keeping in mind that all three institutions contributed equal funds to the collection. Thus, although MSUM faculty were the heaviest users of the resources, our campus will receive only 1/3 of the collection. Keep in mind, again, that the materials at all three institutions will still be shared via interlibrary loan.
Requesting Titles
The Library has a modest budget to purchase new items for the Instructional Video Collection. To request a new video resource for classroom teaching, please e-mail the following information to William Kenz, kenz@mnstate.edu:
- Your name
- Department
- Title of the resource
- Information about where to get the resource – Distributor name and address, URL, etc. – Please include this information so we make sure we get you the correct resource!
- Specific Course Number(s) For Which The Resource Will Be Used
- Semester the Resource will First Be Used: (e.g., Spring 2010, Fall 2010)
The Library has a very limited budget to duplicate items here that went to either NDSU or Concordia. When considering whether to make such a request rather than relying on interlibrary loan from NDSU or Concordia, realize that the budget is small and that you do still have access to the resources that went to the other two schools. To ask for a duplication/replacement of a title, please e-mail the following information to William Kenz, kenz@mnstate.edu:
- Your name
- Department
- Title of the resource (please indicate that it is a replacement)
- Information about where to get the resource – Distributor name and address, URL, etc. – Please include this information so we make sure we get you the correct resource!
- Specific Course Number(s) For Which The Resource Will Be Used
- Semester the Resource will First Be Used: (e.g., Spring 2010, Fall 2010)
For this year’s funds, priority will be given to requests for Spring semester 2010.
A form will be available in the next few weeks, but we know that some of you want to request materials now, so e-mailing William Kenz is the current mechanism.
On behalf of the Library, I want to say that this is not an ideal situation, but we are going to do our best to provide access to the resources you need for teaching your courses effectively. We will do this with a spirit of cooperation between the three TCU campuses, and within the constraints of a tight budget this year, so please be understanding of the financial and human resource limitations.
Sincerely,
Brittney Goodman
