Marketing Director Open Forums
Three candidates have been selected to interview for the position of MSUM’s new Marketing Director. The campus is invited and encouraged to attend the open forums, where candidates will deliver a brief presentation and then answer questions from the audience.

Gregory Wald is currently the web manager at the North Dakota State College of Science. He previously had been general manager of Odney Advertising’s Fargo office and a marketing consultant in the agency’s Bismarck office. While at Odney, his clients included Gate City Bank, the PrimeCare health group, Cass County Electric Cooperative and Global Electric Motorcars, among others. He also managed the agency’s research division while in Fargo, where his clients included MeritCare Health System, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota and the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation. Prior to Odney, he served as communications and marketing manager for Job Service North Dakota after working as a research analyst for Job Service’s Labor Market Information Center.
His higher education experience also includes several semesters as an adjunct faculty member, most recently for the University of North Dakota this past academic year and for North Dakota State University this coming semester. Wald earned his MBA from the University of North Dakota and a bachelor’s degree in business administration and political science/history from Concordia College.
Carla Johanson is currently director of marketing/public relations for Minnesota Online, Office of the Chancellor, where MN Online enrollment has grown 25 and 26% respectively the last two years. From 1993-2006, she was the director of marketing/public relations at Minnesota State Community and Technical College, including campuses at Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Moorhead, Wadena, Bemidji and East Grand Forks. Previous work experience also includes Financial Network Incorporate, Jensen Educational Services D.B.A., Interstate Business College and Crown Life Brokerage. She earned a master’s degree in educational leadership at MSUM, as well as an undergraduate degree here.
Pat Staples is currently a consultant and strategist with Staples & Company, providing customized marketing planning, strategy and support to clients. Prior to consulting, she was executive vice president/marketing at Community First Bankshares for 10 years. She began her career at American Crystal Sugar Company, where she was communications manager and corporate trainer. She also was public relations coordinator for the Heart Health Program and public relations manager at MeritCare Health System. She was an adjunct speech instructor at MSUM from 1989-1991. She holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from MSUM and a master’s degree in speech communication with an emphasis in organizational communication from NDSU.
