MSUM Offers Online Biochemistry Course

MSU Moorhead is offering an online 3-credit biochemistry course that runs June 1-July 23 titled “Biomolecules and Metabolism” (Chem 490/590). It will be taught by Chemistry Professor Shawn Ellingboe.

Students need to have taken general chemistry and at least one semester of organic chemistry lecture to take this course. It is available both for undergraduate and graduate credit (graduate credit requires an additional assignment).

This course will count toward the MSUM chemistry minor, but does not fulfill the prerequisites for taking Biochemistry II (that is Biochemistry I, Chem 400). It also counts toward the biochemistry requirement for Minnesota chemistry certification. A lab component to this class may be offered next summer.

The course may be appropriate for K-12 teachers and those working in health care. The course looks at structures and functions of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids, and explores actions and functions of enzymes as used for the synthesis and degradation of these molecules through metabolic pathways.

For information on how to register, go to http://www.mnstate.edu/summer/registration.cfm on the MSU Moorhead Summer 2009 web site. For questions about the course, contact Shawn Ellingboe at 218-477-5836, ellngboe@mnstate.edu or shawn.ellingboe@charter.net
