There may be times when you’re concerned about a student in your class or an advisee, you’re bothered by a roommate acting differently, or you’re unsure about a student’s behavior. If you are concerned about a student’s wellbeing, but you’re unsure of what to do: contact the campus CARE Team. Some specific reasons (but not all of them) include: suicide ideation, depression, substance abuse, disruptive behavior in class, making violent statements, feeling threatened by a student, and concerns for a student’s welfare.  Read the rest of this entry →

WALKtober

Did you know walking 10,000 steps a day will burn approximately an extra 2,700 calories per week? Walking helps achieve good health and weight loss. Get your “WALK ON” with the WALKtober challenge sponsored by the Hendrix Wellness educators during the month of October. All faculty and students are eligible to participate. Individuals who walk 10,000 steps 4 times each week will be entered in weekly prize drawings. The individual who met the requirements for all of the weeks will be entered in a grand prize drawing.

Sign up at the Hendrix Clinic during the week of September 25 to September 29 and receive your free pedometer and log in sheets.

Trash the Ash

Trash the Ash is an annual event put on by the Wellness Educators that promotes a clean campus by raising awareness of cigarette butt litter. Hendrix Wellness Educators will be placing a yellow flag wherever a butt was found and disposed of on campus.  Read the rest of this entry →

Fat Girls Hiking Body Love Workshop, Group Hike to Maplewood State Park

Do you need some body positive messaging in your life? Do you love being out in nature? Fat Girls Hiking co-founder Summer Michaud-Skog is coming to campus for two events:

  • Body Love Workshop (Thursday, Sept. 28, 3-4 p.m., Women’s Center) – focuses on joyful movement, self-care, the body love spectrum and our connection with nature and ourselves. Open to students of all body types and gender identities.
  • Group Hike at Maplewood State ParkMN (Friday, Sept. 29, 2-7 p.m.) – travel with Summer and continue the discussion about body positivity in this beautiful natural setting during fall’s peak. Transportation and snacks provided. Depart from CMU parking lot at 2 p.m. Open to students of all body types and gender identities. Hike is limited to 20 participants. Registration required. ’13 Reasons Why’ We Should Talk About Suicide Panel

Wednesday, Sept. 6 | 3-4 p.m. | CMU 205

Join us for a panel discussion for Suicide Awareness Week from 3-4 p.m. in CMU 205. Using Netflix’s controversial hit series “13 Reasons Why” as a jumping off point, we’ll discuss representations of mental health and suicide in pop culture, suicide risk in marginalized communities, plus resources and strategies for prevention. Both students and professionals will speak on this issue, followed by a Q&A with the audience.

Death of MSUM student Cody Hennum

We are saddened to report that the death of MSUM student Cody Hennum. Cody passed away on August 22, 2017. He was a History/Social Studies student.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 26 at 2 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, North Campus, in Fargo, with visitation at 1 p.m. A prayer service will be held on Friday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, with visitation from 5-7 p.m. For more details and to read Cody’s obituary, visit hansonrunsvold.com.

MSUM is following established protocols for the death of a student that includes communications with family, coordination between campuses office, supporting our students, and informing faculty teaching the student’s classes. Faculty, staff and students with questions may direct them to the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, 218-477-2171. They may also contact Hendrix Clinic & Counseling Center at 218-477-2630 if they wish to speak with a counselor.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Cody Hennum.

Spring Break Fitness Challenge begins Feb. 4

Participate in Spring Break Fitness Challenge to be drawn in a number of prizes sponsored by your Wellness Educators. Starting Feb. 4 until spring break take one group fitness class a week along with a 45 minute workout three times a week or two additional group fitness classes a week.

More information will be on your starter packet which can be picked up at the Wellness Center or Hendrix.

Memorial Service for Carol Grimm on August 6

Carol Grimm, 63, passed away Saturday, July 16 at her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Carol retired from MSUM June 30 after serving as director of Hendrix Health and Gerdin Wellness Center for the past eight years.

Please keep Carol’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 6 at Faith United Methodist Church in Fargo with a reception to follow. Carol’s full obituary can be found at hansonrunsvold.com.
