MSUM Faculty Members, Alumni Attend Geospatial Analysis Conference

A Faculty Development Associates team comprised of Andrew Chen, Computer Science and Information Systems; Rinita Dalan, Anthropology and Earth Sciences; Alexandria Fogarty, School of Media Arts and Design; and T. J. Hansen, Economics, Law & Politics; attended the Esri Education and User Conferences in San Diego, California June 25-29, 2016. Look Out Point Screened in Rome

Look Out Point, an experimental film by Kyja K-Nelson (School of Media Arts & Design), recently screened as part of two curated programs in Rome, Italy. K-Nelson’s film is currently screening at the Experimental Art, Architecture and Design Festival at the BAU International Academy of Rome. In addition, K-Nelson’s film was part of an exhibition at the Worldhotel Ripa Roma called Oxygen, a contemporary video art and performing art festival, curated to explore the re-appropriation of the natural world to give new interpretations to psychical and physical places that transform our lives.  Read the rest of this entry →

Spring Scholarship Gala | Students Directly Impacted by Event Proceeds

On Saturday, April 23, 2016, MSUM will once again be hosting an event targeted toward raising money for need-based, merit, academic and athletic student scholarships. Previously known as the Founders Scholarship Gala, the Spring Scholarship Gala is the university’s biggest fundraising event and directly impacts the lives of students across departments.

On a seemingly regular school day, Tomi Thompson got a call from her cousin, MSUM Mass Communications Department Secretary Wendy Olsgard. Deadlines were approaching for scholarship applications and the encouraging cousin knew Thompson was more than qualified.

Fast forward to 2016. With tears in her eyes, the senior, double-majoring in broadcast journalism and integrated advertising and public relations, explained how receiving scholarships made it possible for her to accept an internship with the Minnesota Vikings last summer. 2016 Chalgren Award Presented to Raymond Rea

Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) faculty member Ray Rea was awarded the Inter Faculty Organization’s (IFO) 2016 James Eric Chalgren Award on April 1. Ray is an Associate Professor of Film/Video Production at MSUM and a long-time member of the IFO Issues Committee (2009-2015). The James Eric Chalgren Award recognizes an IFO member who has improved the professional lives of LGBT faculty through leadership, and activism at the campus and statewide level. As an out and visible transgender man, artist, and faculty member at MSUM, Ray has used his voice, art, and personal experience to raise awareness around LGBT issues and create a more inclusive environment on his campus and in the Fargo-Moorhead community.

When accepting the award Ray said, “I’m so proud to be part of an organization that has so strongly advocated for the trans community. I’m proud of the progress we have been able to accomplish by sticking together as a united voice against discrimination.” Read the rest of this entry →

Artwork created by senior BA and BFA candidates Eryn Anderson, Brittany Anderson, Arthur Bowling, Natalie Devick, Josiah Griffey, Nathen Jensen, Spencer Johannes, Rachel Kraft, Benjamin Lamb, Bikash Rai, Caitlin Skjervem, and Christina Torgerson will be on view from Tuesday, March 29 through Thursday, April 14. Students are working towards fulfillment of requirements for the BA and BFA in Art and Design.

Katie Mikkelsen has curated an exhibition of Artists’ Books

School of Visual Arts student Katie Mikkelsen has curated an exhibition of Artists’ Books that is on display on the first floor of the Livingston Lord Library. The collection of experimental artists’ books were issued by Circle Press established by Ron King in London. All the books are part of the MSUM permanent collection. The exhibition will be on display until the first week of February and is open to all students, faculty and staff. The exhibition was in part funded by the Dille Fund for Excellence and was made possible with the help of Allen Sheets (School of Media Arts), Anna Arnar and Lauren Kinney (School of Visual Arts).

Horizon Middle School AVID Students to Explore MSUM

Nearly 120 Horizon Middle School AVID Students will be touring MSUM campus on Thursday, January 14. After being welcomed by Admissions, the students will get to participate in activities all around campus, including a round-robin tour of 5 arts activities (e.g. drum circle, caricatures, improv, etc), DNA extraction from strawberries, a Q&A with college students and faculty panels and planetarium shows.

SoMAD hosted 5th annual student mixer

On Sept.17th the School of Media Arts & Design hosted a student mixer in the Center for the Arts Great Hall. The annual event (now in its 5th year) was organized to increase collaboration and foster an atmosphere of continuing cooperation between students of SoMAD (Film, Animation, Graphic Communications, Graphic Design and Photography) and students of the School of Performing Arts. The event included pizza, pop, music and an opportunity for students to be added to the SoMAD actor/talent database. Over 125 students and faculty were in attendance.

Brandau film continues on festival circuit

School of Media Arts & Design professor Tom Brandau’s latest film, Home Delivery, continues its run on the festival circuit. Set in Baltimore (1974) the dramatic short tells the story of two newspaper delivery boys (one white, one African-American) struggling with the racial divide between their adjacent neighborhoods. The film recently screened at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Film Festival, the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival (Seattle), the New York Children’s International Film Festival and the Peace On Earth Film Festival (Chicago). Film Studies Alumnus Wins Two Emmy Awards

MSUM film studies alumnus Ryan Sailer, ‘08, won two Emmy Awards for projects he edited while working for the Fargo-based production company Video Arts Studios.

Sailer was awarded the first Emmy for editing the civil rights documentary “The Road to Little Rock,” which follows the inspirational story of Federal Judge Ronald Davies and nine teenagers who exemplified courage, honor, determination and responsibility. Read the rest of this entry →
