We’ve all been there. Someone asks “do you have any questions for me?” and your mind goes completely blank. If you’re looking for a starting point to help you on your higher ed journey, look no further! Here are a few questions you’ll want to ask your admissions rep.

1. What do I need to mark in my calendar?

To make your first semester as smooth as possible you’ll want to make sure you have your important documents signed and delivered on time. Things like FAFSA, official transcripts, housing contracts, and even immunization records are necessary before classes start.

2. How do I pay for college?

Did you know MSUM awards over $3.36 million in scholarships every year? It can be overwhelming to sort through all the applications and opportunities, so ask your rep to help you find the ones that will work for you.

3. Will you accept my transfer, PSEO, or AP credits?

Whether or not your credits will transfer can have a big effect on your academic schedule as you progress towards graduation. Before you get too far into your college career you should make sure you know which courses you need and which you can skip.

4. What will my academic schedule look like?

Each major, minor, emphasis, or certification we offer at MSUM has a carefully designed course schedule supporting it so our graduates can quickly become leaders in their chosen field. As much as we would love to offer every possible major, no university can be the perfect place for every student. Communicate your goals with your admissions rep early so they can ensure you are on the right path.

5. What is life like off campus?

The college experience is about exploring the world around you. The Fargo-Moorhead community has a lot to offer beyond education. Share your interests and your rep can point you to local organizations and attractions that you might enjoy.

6. What if I need help?

Your academic journey may come with unique challenges, and your admissions rep can give you the resources to prevent them from turning into roadblocks. Academic counseling, accessibility resources, and tutoring are examples of things we can offer to help you achieve your highest potential.

7. What is there to do when I need a study break?

When classes are done and homework is complete, what should you do with your time? Sports, interest-based activities, or activities that help you develop professional skills can bring your college experience to the next level.

There’s really no wrong way to go about gathering information to help you choose a college. We hope these prompts will inspire you to ask questions, to learn more, and to make the best higher education decisions for your goals.
