Sustainable Students Association Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge

MSUM’s Sustainable Students Association (SSA) will be hosting a plastic bag recycling competition on campus beginning in October and ending in April. They will be collecting plastic bags for six months, with a goal of collecting 500 pounds—or approximately 40,500 plastic bags.

If MSUM reaches its goal, the university will receive a free bench made of recycled plastic, in addition to helping save the environment!

Accepted materials include:

  • Grocery bags
  • Bread bags
  • Case overwrap (from bulk beverages)
  • Dry cleaning bags
  • Newspaper sleeves
  • Ice bags
  • Wood pellet bags
  • Ziplock and other re-sealable bags
  • Produce bags
  • Bubble wrap and packaging air pillows
  • Salt bags
  • Cereal bags

It is important to note all materials must be clean, dry and free of food residue.

Bins for plastic bag collection will be located in Nemzek, Hagen, John Neumaier Hall, and in MacLean near the Dragon Café, and the CMU on the first floor.
