Bearing Witness: The Art of the Photojournalist
MSUM gallery exhibit features Forum photojournalists
The work of three local photographers who gained reputations for outstanding news photography are featured in “Bearing Witness: The Art of the Photojournalist,” an exhibit opening May 15 and running through June 29 in the Art Gallery and the Art Annex on the MSUM campus.
Colburn Hvidston III, Dave Wallis and Bruce Crummy gained the unofficial nickname “The Three Musketeers of Photography” while employed as news photographers for The Forum. Hvidston arrived at the paper in 1968 and retired in 2005. Crummy joined the staff in 1976 and retired in 2008. Wallis began his career at The Forum in 1977 and retired last October.
“The exhibit is a testament to the photojournalist’s art,” said Merrie Sue Holtan, assistant professor of Communication and Journalism and Director of the Marcil Center for Innovative Journalism at MSUM. “Photojournalists strive to capture our imaginations through compelling, informative and entertaining images. To photojournalists, images add meaning to stories, but also have a life of their own.”
The exhibit of 60 images dating from the late 60s to the present will also include the work of current Forum photographers. Faculty from MSUM’s School of Art and Forum photographer Michael Vosburg curated the images and text panels.
The Gallery and the Annex are located in the lower level of the Roland Dille Center for the Arts (CA 151) at 801 13th St. South, Moorhead.
