Lace up your shoes to run, jog or walk to join fellow Dragons for the 7th Annual Dragon Fire Walk for Athletics April 27-28, 2012. The annual event is one of the largest fundraising efforts to raise money for athletic scholarships at MSU Moorhead.

The festivities begin Friday, April 27 at 5 p.m. at Alex Nemzek on the MSU Moorhead campus with a spaghetti dinner, youth activity area, silent auction and door prizes. The Youth Fun Run begins at 5:30 p.m. on the Masanz outdoor track. The opening ceremony follows at 6:00 p.m., featuring the unveiling of the new electronic Hall of Fame, recognition of the 2012 Walk Leaders, and the presentation of the 2nd annual Greg and Judy Peterson Legacy award.

Then it’s rise and shine on Saturday morning for the Dragon races including a 5K, 10K, 10 mile and 10 mile two-person relay beginning at 9 a.m. A Breakfast of Champions, Fargo Running Company Awards, Walk Team Awards and alumni games will follow the conclusion of the races.

Six Dragons will be honored as Walk Leaders: Alumni Sandy Schob, Mary Ann Donnay, Karin Schumacher and Larry Scott, along with the 2011 student-athletes of the year; track member Derek Bredy and women’s basketball player Angie Jetvig.

“I have been blessed to have had a front row seat to watch Dragon athletics for a long time, and I am well aware of the great commitment our athletes and coaches make,” said Scott. “We need to put our best foot forward and provide them with a fair chance to reach their dreams and compete with success on conference, regional and national levels. Surely we owe them that much.”

Jetvig describes how important the Walk is to MSUM student-athletes. “I feel honored to be a Dragon Fire Walk Leader because it is such an important event for athletics to raise money for scholarships. Being a Division II collegiate athlete requires a lot of time and dedication. When scholarships are available it can relieve a lot of financial stress, which allows athletes to focus on the most important things which are school and their sport.” Learn more about the Walk Leaders at
