Earns 3rd EPPY among 65 national, regional awards
Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Horizonlines.org was named a national finalist in the 2012 EPPYTM Awards presented by “Editor & Publisher” magazine. In its 17th year, this international contest honors the best media-affiliated websites across 30 diverse categories, including recognizing excellence in college and university journalism in three categories. Charly Haley is a summer intern for the Detroit Lakes Newspapers.

Minnesota State University Moorhead senior Charly Haley is finding herself knee-deep in local journalism, as she was hired to work as an intern for the Detroit Lakes Newspapers.
Haley, a Sartell, Minn. native, is majoring in Mass Communications with an emphasis in muli-media journalism and minoring in communication studies.
Since starting her career in Detroit Lakes, Haley has been writing feature stories for the front of the Lake Area Press, as well as reporting for the Becker County Record, the Detroit Lakes Tribune and working on stories for both the Summer Living and Summer Scene magazines.
Readers can also find her work in the special section tabs for the water carnival and the Becker County Fair.
“I really like being a journalist because I like meeting other people, and I feel like you learn so much because you get to see so many things as you work,” said Haley, who will remain with the Detroit Lakes Newspapers until August 15.

Two members of The Advocate staff received awards at the 2012 Associated Collegiate Press Best of the Midwest conference in Minneapolis, Feb. 10-12. Charly Haley was awarded fourth place in the Feature Story category for her article “Students experience homelessness,” published Sept. 21, and was awarded an honorable mention in the News Story category for “House looks at cutting Pell grants,” published Nov. 3.
Tyler Sorensen was awarded an honorable mention in the Editorial/Commentary category for his column, “The importance of showing interest,” published Oct. 5. Read the rest of this entry →
