“School-Age Therapy for Stuttering from the Other Side of the Therapy Table” Q&A Session/Discussion today

This event, hosted by the Fargo-Moorhead Chapter of the National Stuttering Association, will focus on experiences with speech therapy for stuttering. Parents, SLPs, and members of the community are invited to ask members of the NSA questions on topics related to stuttering and stuttering therapy for school-age children. There will be door prizes and refreshments. This event will be held in the South Porch of Murray Hall, MSUM Campus, Thursday, April 18 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

American Sign Language Night

American Sigh Language Night (ASL) is April 13, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Come for a night full of fun and signing! Members of ASL Club and the Deaf community will showcase a variety of entertainment including signing songs, performing skits, and showing a short documentary about having a Deaf parent. There will also be several speakers presenting important topics in Deaf culture.

Don’t know ASL? That’s okay! Grab a passport and travel to different tables to learn some basic signs and hear about topics in Deaf culture. A filled passport gives you a chance to win a door prize! Come learn about American Sign Language and Deaf culture, have fun, and eat free snacks!

The SLHS Department would like to announce that the MSUM/UND Spring Symposium will be held at the Courtyard by Marriott in Moorhead on April 4-5, 2013. The speaker is Pamela Crooke from Social Thinking who will be talking about communication of children and adults with high-functioning autism or Aspergers. More information and registration details will be available as the date gets closer.

National Stuttering Association meeting at MSU Moorhead

The Fargo-Moorhead Chapter of the National Stuttering Association will be meeting on the following dates on the MSU Moorhead campus, at 6:30 p.m. in Murray Hall, room 210. All are invited to attend.

February 21: “An Online Visit with Judy Kuster”
Judy Kuster, creator of the Stuttering Home Page, will join us live via teleconference. She is an ASHA Fellow and professor at MSU Mankato, and she hosts the annual online conference for International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD). Judy will share stories about the Stuttering Home Page, the most significant changes she has seen in stuttering, and where we are headed. There will also be time for questions.

March 21: Topic to be determined.

April 18: Open House. Topic: “All You Wanted to Know about Stuttering Therapy From People Who Stutter.”

May 16: “Reunion”

Alumni book available for Kindle

Leni Ramberg’s latest book, A Clown Dog’s Christmas, is now available for Kindle, and will soon be available on Nook readers. The paperback is available through Amazon, says Ramberg (1973, Speech-Theatre and English). A book-signing event took place in Los Angeles, where Ramberg lives, last Sunday. The writer’s work was edited by another MSUM alum, Pamela Troumbly (1971, Elementary Education). The two women have worked together on several writing projects, including Ramberg’s first book for young people, Girlfriend Detectives.

Richard K. Adler, SLHS Department was part of a panel discussion on voice therapy at the Canadian Professional Association for Transgender Health in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Sept. 22, 2012.

Eleven Speech-Language Pathology graduate students have been accepted to present at national convention

Eleven students in the Speech-Language Pathology graduate program in the SLHS department have been accepted to present research at the national convention of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association in Atlanta, Ga., in November. The research was supervised by Dr. Richard Adler, Dr. Kris Vossler, Dr. Nancy Paul, and Dr. Mary Drake.

Free hearing screenings to those attending Big Iron Sept. 11-13

The students and faculty of the SLHS Department will be offering free hearing screenings to those attending the Big Iron event at the West Fargo Fairgrounds September 11-13. They will be using the portable audiology booth and giving away free ear plugs and information about hearing protection. The SLHS Department has provided this service to the community for over 10 years; screening hundreds of individuals each year.

Richard Adler will present at two upcoming events

Dr. Richard Adler, Speech/Language/Hearing Sciences, will present “Counseling for Voice Disorders” at the University of Minnesota Duluth on October 6. He will also attend and present at the Canadian Professional Association for Transgender Health (CPATH) conference, September 21-23.

Seven of his students are presenting their research as poster sessions at the ASHA convention in Atlanta, Ga., November 14-18.

If you are a person who stutters, or have a special interest in stuttering, the Fargo-Moorhead chapter of the National Stuttering Association welcomes you! The National Stuttering Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing hope and empowerment to children and adults who stutter, their families, and professionals through support, education, advocacy, and research.
