Minnesota State University Moorhead is pleased to announce that Jane Bergland, PhD, RN, has earned the designation Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) after meeting strict eligibility criteria and successfully completing a rigorous certification examination developed and administered by the National League for Nursing.

The NLN’s Academic Nurse Educator Certification (ANEC) Program has conferred new visibility and stature upon the academic nursing community, long overdue, said Dr. Beverly Malone, CEO of the NLN. “Through the certification program, we have made clear to the ranks of higher education that the role of nurse educator is an advanced professional practice discipline with a defined practice setting and demonstrable standards of excellence,” she commented. In years to come, she added, it is hoped that certified nurse educators will command higher salaries and be first in line for promotions and tenure.

A pair of nurses is addressing the need for more nurse educators to meet the projected nursing shortage in an effort to support new practitioners transitioning into academic roles.

Allyson Torstveit, MS, RN, from Rasmussen College is working with Barbara Matthees, PhD, RN, CNE, from Minnesota State University Moorhead. Torstveit is a 2011 graduate of the MSUM nurse MS program, and will start her DNP in June. Torstviet was appointed to the Nurse Faculty Leadership Academy. There are only 16 mentors in this international academy admitted after a rigorous application.

The capstone project they’re working on would focus on implementing a toolkit that will support new nursing faculty with the tools and assurance that is needed to successfully transition into a sustainable career in academia and to enhance student learning. This toolkit would include obtaining a masters or doctoral degree, guidance from fellow faculty and mentors, and formal faculty role development.

The Nurse Faculty Leadership Academy, developed by the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International’s (STTI) Leadership Institute with a grant from The Elsevier Foundation, will help alleviate the nurse faculty shortage by providing knowledge, skill development opportunities and support to retain new nurse educators who have transitioned into the role.

The 2012-13 NFLA cohort includes 16 scholars, 16 mentors and eight faculty, who represent 29 universities, 15 states and provinces, and four countries including Australia, Canada and Thailand.

“The Elsevier Foundation is pleased to support this program that is helping to develop a new generation of nurse faculty leaders,” said David Ruth, Executive Director for the Elsevier Foundation. “We believe that when we invest in leadership and provide the opportunity for individuals to grow and influence others, we are also helping the broader community of colleagues and nursing students down the road, all of whom contribute to improving health care quality.”

The pairs are addressing such topics as implementing team teaching structures, developing strategies to assist new graduation nurses transitioning to practice, and improving healthcare through the development of transdisciplinary teams. Two groups are working with integrating and evaluating clinical simulation into the nursing curriculum.

“The NFLA supports new nurse faculty in their quest to lead the development and implementation of innovative nursing education programs. Through a mentoring relationship and a leadership project, academy Fellows focus on developing essential leadership skills and learn how to incorporate emerging teaching methodologies such as simulation and other technologies into the nursing curriculum,” says Suzanne Prevost, PhD, RN, COI, STTI president.

Research shows that new faculty who have worked successfully with a mentor have higher job satisfaction, with increased promotions and mobility than those without mentors. Faculty who have worked with a mentor are also more productive in obtaining competitive grants, leading professional organizations and publishing in scholarly books and journal articles.

Tony Forrester, PhD, RN, ANEF, NFLA’s lead faculty member, shares STTI’s commitment to individual leadership development. “I want nurse faculty to be successful — more than just satisfied with their career. I want faculty to lead the innovation and provide the leadership needed to truly transform nursing education for the future,” he said.

1:30-2:50 p.m., Wednesday, March 7 – CMU 203

Colleges and universities play an integral role in providing opportunities for dialogue and critical thinking around sometimes controversial topics. However, there tends to be a hesitation to have too public of a dialogue around these topics out of fear of creating conflict or upsetting the “Minnesota nice” conversation culture. MSU Moorhead has had a history of barrier-breaking policy initiatives, world-class faculty and research, thought provoking curriculum and inviting dynamic speakers to enhance our campus community dialogue. Controversial Conversations is an opportunity for on-going, respectful dialogue around issues that impact students, employees and our communities.

Our first topic is “Where Do We Start? Developing a Campus Culture of Respect and Civility for Controversial Conversations to Occur.” The discussion will focus on identifying the ground rules that should be implemented in order to allow for respectful and civil public dialogue. Attendees will share what they consider to be opportunities and barriers for such dialogue to occur as part of our campus community. Students, faculty, staff and administrators are invited and encouraged to participate in this exciting new program.

Joshua A. Boschee, Assistant Director of Leadership and Organization, and Dr. Lonni Schicker, faculty in the School or Nursing and Healthcare Leadership, will facilitate the group discussion.

Three Nursing faculty members, Pam Kirk, Helen Harris and Vicki Teske, and nine students—Courtney Conyers, Amy Lavalla, Heather Erickson, Tim Yancey, Melinda Thompson, Piper Delapointe, Deb Wolff, Lisa Murr Johnson and Alicia Saue—attended the Students Investing in Nursing’s Future-Geriatrics (SIN-G) conference held April 8 in Alexandria, Minn.

Thirty-seven nursing students from eight schools in west central Minnesota participated in this one-of -a-kind event focusing on a career in geriatric nursing. Nursing students were selected to participate in the SIN-G project through a competitive application process and an expressed interest to learn more about, and potentially specialize in, nursing care of older adults.

To jump start their professional geriatric nursing career, students were given a year membership in the National Gerontological Nursing Association.

The conference was supported through a grant from the West Central Initiative with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. WCI is a regional community foundation that works to strengthen west central Minnesota by encouraging business and employment opportunities, providing training and support to workers and their families, working with communities and the region to help them thrive, and promoting philanthropy.

The attached news release contains more details about the conference and the need to address the needs of an aging population.

The purpose of this study was to explore the reasons involved with why women run marathons from an intergenerational perspective. The research literature is limited with long distance running, specifically a gap remains as to why women run marathons. This study will begin to fill a gap and begin to understand why women run marathons and if there are similarities and differences between them from an intergenerational perspective. The research questions included: 1) Why do “you” run marathons?; 2) Are there intergenerational difference within women’s perceptions for marathon running?; and 3) Is there a relationship of life satisfaction and running life satisfaction for these marathon runners? This study was qualitative and utilized a theoretical Grounded Theory approach. Study findings will be discussed about how life satisfaction was related to the marathon women’s lives and how similar and different perceptions emerged from the data based on participant’s age.

Refreshments will be provided.
