Psi Chi, the International Honor Society for Psychology, inducted 14 new members into the MSUM chapter on May 6. The new members are: Danielle Bany, Megan Boeddeker, Amanda Heitkamp, Miranda Horst, Kelsey Ihringer, Katherine Johanson, Samantha Kallberg, Catherine Kippley, Emily Lyons, Courtney Messinger, Jesse Olson, Jessica Sand, Emily Steinle, and Madhuri Tiwari.

Psychology alum presents at Neuropsychiatric Research Institute

Alum John Gunstad, Psychology ’97, is presenting “Obesity, Bariatric, Surgery and Cognition” at the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute in Fargo May 14. See attached document below for details.

Gunstad is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at Kent State University.

Gunstad is the only MSUM Psychology alum to win the Paterson Award for the top Psychology Undergraduate in the State of Minnesota in the last 30+ years.

Psychology Departmental awards given to undergrad students

The Psychology Department gave out four Departmental Awards to undergraduate students at both the junior and senior level to recognize their achievements. This spring, Bria Itzen was given the “Psychology Student Departmental Award” (junior psychology major), while Kelsey Ihringer was given the “Psychology Research Award” (junior psychology major). In the fall, Tiffany Zilka was given the “Psychology Departmental Award” (senior psychology major), while Dylan O’Brien was give the “Psychology Research Award” (senior psychology major) for demonstrated excellence in research activities.

Richard Kolotkin publishes marriage self-help book

Psychology faculty members and students attend Red River Psychology Conference

Seven faculty members (Bergstrom, Dalhouse, Malone, Nawrot, Nickell, Potter, and Stewart) from the Psychology Department along with a number of students attended the 27th Annual Red River Psychology Conference at NDSU April 12. The conference is designed to showcase research being done by undergraduate students at NDSU, MSUM, Concordia College, and other regional colleges and universities.

Three MSUM Psychology majors (Tim Fode, Megan Boeddeker, and Bria Itzen) made presentations of their research.

Be that Teacher: Breaking the Cycle for Struggling Readers, a book coauthored by Doris-Walker Dalhouse, Professor Emerita, STL, and Victoria Resko, Vanderbelt University, was listed in a recent publication by Teachers College Press as one of its three bestsellers.

Christine Malone gives lecture on critical thinking

Professor Christine Malone, Psychology, will give a lecture on critical thinking Tuesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. in Science Lab 118. The title of the lecture is “Can we Teach Critical Thinking? Cognitive Psychology’s Response.”

The lecture is part of the College of Social and Natural Sciences lecture series. The lectures focus on current issues in the sciences. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Doris Walker-Dalhouse, professor emerita STL, and A. Derick Dalhouse, Psychology, has a chapter (chapter 1) in a recently published, edited book, entitled: Struggling Readers Can Succeed: Teaching Solutions Based on Real Kids in Classrooms and Communities. The title of the chapter is: Outcomes in Reading for Bryant, An African-American Urban Learner: A Case Study. The editors of the book are Nina L. Nilsson, St. Joseph’s University and Sandra E. School Psychology faculty and graduate students presented at national conference in Seattle. Dr. Peg Potter and graduate student Mike Porter presented a poster, “One Probe Versus Three Probes in Benchmarking Procedures” at the National Association of School Psychology conference in Seattle, Wash. Feb 12-15.

Graduate student Breanne Anderson and Dr. Lisa Stewart presented a poster on the topic “Video Self Modeling with a Student with Autism.” Stewart and students Tiffany Richards and Kayla Kuntz also presented a poster summarizing two studies, titled “Vocabulary Instruction Techniques Matter: Exploring Preschool Vocabulary Instruction and Measurement.”

A total of five graduate students and Dr. Potter, Dr. Stewart and Dr. Melroe attended the conference.

Sibley and Korella Selzler, Library, have received an award for a research article published in the “Journal of Reading Education.” This “Outstanding Article Award” was selected by the Organization of Teacher Educators in Reading of the International Reading Association.

Dr. Potter and Dr. Stewart, MSUM School Psychology faculty, and 19 graduate students attended the MSPA Mid-Winter Conference Jan. 17 and 18. The theme of the conference was “Using Data to Improve Student Outcomes.” Several students also volunteered at the conference.

Lisa Stewart trains Reading Corps

Lisa Stewart, MSUM School Psychology, trains Reading Corps in Massechusetts. Dr. Lisa Stewart provided a day of on-site consultation and a full day training for PreKindergarten Reading Corps staff, teachers, coaches and volunteers in Massechusetts on NOvember 30 and Dec 1. Her visit was part of the Americorps Reading Corps National Replication Project that is replicating the success of Minnesota Reading Corps in other states. Dr. Stewart focused on instructional coaching skills with the staff during her on-site visits and then spent a day training all Massechusetts members, coaches and staff on implementing tiered small group early literacy interventions for the most at-risk preschoolers in their centers and classrooms.

Elizabeth Nawrot invited speaker at NDSU

Elizabeth Nawrot, Psychology, is the invited speaker at NDSU’s Psychology Department Colloquium Series Friday Oct. 19. Nawrot will present “The development of depth perception in infancy: Motion parallax and eye movement systems.” This talk will summarize Nawrot’s three-year research program to study infant visual development that has been funded through a $260,000 grant from the National Institutes for Health.

The talk is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the NDSU Department of Psychology and Center for Visual Neuroscience.

Dr. Lisa Stewart trains Minnesota Reading Corps members and teachers

Dr. Lisa H. Stewart, School Psychology, trained Americorps Minnesota Reading Corps members and their internal coach teacher partners at the St. Paul River Centre August 13-17.

This year 1,187 MRC members will provide early literacy and reading research-based interventions to children from age three to 3rd grade in over 600 schools and preschools throughout the state. MRC is the largest state Americorps program in the country and there are MRC members serving in Moorhead, Detroit Lakes, Pelican Rapids, and many other local communities.

Stewart has worked with the MRC program as it has grown over the years and has provided training, materials development, research and intervention development, program evaluation, and consultation expertise as well as acting as a master coach for the Pre-K and K-3 aspects of the program. Stewart also has been involved in starting similar programs in North Dakota and Michigan. The goal of MRC is to have every child in Minnesota become a successful reader by the end of 3^rd grade.

Julia Roland to serve as Interim Director of First Year Programs

We are pleased to announce that Julia Roland has agreed to serve as Interim Director of First Year Programs effective August 6. Roland has eight years of experience working in Student Affairs, with four years’ experience working in First Year Programs. Roland’s past experience has included programming in the areas of new student orientation and registration, first year experience, family day, learning communities and ‘After Dark’ activities both at MSUM and previously with Mayville State University. Roland received both her Master’s degree in Counseling and Student Affairs and her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from MSUM.

Roland will provide effective leadership for First Year Programs this next year and we look forward to her continuing contributions to student success at MSUM. Please congratulate Julia when you see her on campus.

Lisa Stewart and Mary Dosch presented at UND Response to Intervention conference

Dr. Lisa Stewart, school psychology, and Dr. Mary Dosch, CTL, presented at the North Dakota Response to Intervention conference in Fargo on June 18, 19 and 20. More than 300 educators attended the conference from North Dakota and Minnesota.

Stewart was also involved in planning the conference and eight graduate students from the MSUM school psychology program attended and volunteered at the conference.

Seventeen MSUM psychology students presented research at the 26th Annual Red River Psychology Conference on April 19 and 20, 2012. The students were Justine Breedon, Spencer Coffman, Ethan Dahl, Dominique DeZiel, Tim Fode, Kimberly Fritel, Jesse Forster, Farryn Helm, Kelsey Ihringer, Bria Itzen, Jennifer Livingood, Emily Lyons, Megan Nere, Nathan Nowak, Dylan O’Brien, Rachel Thompson, and Jennifer Wenner.

The MSUM Psychology Club and Psi Chi hosted the event on campus. The conference included two invited addresses by Dr. Blair Johnson, a social psychologist from the University of Connecticut. In addition, there were 90 student presenters representing six different schools across the region. Total conference attendance across the two days was estimated at 300 attendees. The 27th Annual Red River Psychology Conference will be hosted by NDSU in the spring of 2013.
