			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Seventeen MSUM psychology students presented research at the 26th Annual Red River Psychology Conference on April 19 and 20, 2012.  The students were Justine Breedon, Spencer Coffman, Ethan Dahl, Dominique DeZiel, Tim Fode, Kimberly Fritel, Jesse Forster, Farryn Helm, Kelsey Ihringer, Bria Itzen, Jennifer Livingood, Emily Lyons, Megan Nere, Nathan Nowak, Dylan O’Brien, Rachel Thompson, and Jennifer Wenner. <span id="more-15466"></span></p>
<p>The MSUM Psychology Club and Psi Chi hosted the event on campus. The conference included two invited addresses by Dr. Blair Johnson, a social psychologist from the University of Connecticut. In addition, there were 90 student presenters representing six different schools across the region. Total conference attendance across the two days was estimated at 300 attendees. The 27th Annual Red River Psychology Conference will be hosted by NDSU in the spring of 2013.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The MSUM Psychology Department and Psychology Club are pleased to host the 26<sup>th</sup> Annual Red River Psychology Conference at MSUM April 19 and 20. Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Blair Johnson from the University of Connecticut. Dr. Johnson, a 1983 alumnus of MSUM, is a social psychologist interested in social influence and health promotion, especially with regard to HIV prevention, antidepressants, and exercise.<span id="more-14932"></span></p>
<p>On Thursday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m., Dr. Johnson will deliver his evening address entitled “Some Dashed Hopes but the Power of Belief Wins in the End: Lessons Learned from Anti-Depressant Trials.” The evening address will take place in the Science Laboratory Building, room 104. Dr. Johnson’s luncheon address at 12:45 p.m. on Friday, April 20 will be entitled “Why Do HIV Prevention Trials Success Rates Vary: Networks, Individuals, and Resources.”</p>
<p>The luncheon address will be held in the Comstock Memorial Union ballroom. <p>The poster, &#8220;Going on a Bear Hunt: Enhancing Vocabulary Development in Preschool using Repeated Read-Alouds&#8221;, was based on data collected for Sara&#8217;s Master&#8217;s thesis and follow up data collected by Tara Hanson, psychology student intern, with Dr. Lisa Stewart as advisor.  <span id="more-13958"></span></p>
<p>19 School psychology graduate students: Tiffany Richards, Amanda Schmaltz, Kishan Singh, Mike Porter, Kelli McGovern, Tom Borowicz, Tiffany Bouwman, Breanne Anderson, Britney Bachmeier, David Gano, Loren Houle, Danielle Jones, Sara Raue, Daidre Vaala, and Jacqueline Schliinz, Jessica Remhoff, Julie Przekwas, Karla Skwira and Dan Bultsma, along with faculty Drs. Margaret Potter, Olivia Melroe &amp; Lisa Stewart, also attended the two day conference. The conference theme was &#8220;Promoting Resilience: Identifying and Advocating for the Needs of Our At-Risk Youth.&#8221;</p>

<p>First 5 presented a paper titled &#8220;Making Powerful Outcomes Happen: Using Child and Teacher Assessment to Secure Early Literacy Skills&#8221; at the California Head Start Edward Zigler Western Research Institute in Orange County, Calif. on Jan. 31, 2012.</p>
<p>The group presented evidence of early childhood educator professional development outcomes and child literacy improvements across two large implementation projects, one in Minnesota and the other in California.</p>

We study the development of vision and perception by observing how children pay attention to three-dimensional objects and patterns. It takes just one 15 minute visit to the lab here on campus and all families receive a $10 gift card for participating. Two-to five-month-old babies and children from 5-6 or 9-10-years-old needed now!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The College of Social and Natural Sciences awarded Fall Student Research Awards to support student research for majors in the College. Member sof the College’s Student Advisory Board reviewed applications and made the final determination of grant recipients.</p>
<p>All projects are endorsed by a faculty supervisor, and applicants must be willing to present her/his research results at the MSUM Student Academic Conference. Grants are available for conducting research (photocopy expenses, equipment and software purchases, etc.) and/or for travel to a conference where research will be presented.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Sarah Butrum</strong>, who will graduate in May with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in Psychology and minors in Business Management and Political Science, is one of the 12 students from 12 tribes and nine universities selected this year as a Native American Congressional Intern. This highly regarded internship program is intended to provide American Indians and Alaska Natives with an insider&#8217;s view of the federal government.<span id="more-10422"></span></p>
<p>The Udall Foundation awards  these internships every summer on the basis of merit to college juniors or seniors, recent graduates from tribal or four-year colleges, or graduate or law students who have demonstrated an interest in fields related to tribal public policy. The new Udall Interns will complete an intensive 10-week internship this summer.</p>
<p>Sarah plans to pursue a master&#8217;s degree in public policy or another related field. She will be interning for Senator Tim Johnson of South Dakota.</p>
