Zepper, a Moorhead High graduate, told students that he became interested in writing in second grade.

“My parents read to me all the time, and the library became going to the toy store,” Zepper said.

He shared with students how his path to writing began early — checking out books from the bookmobile, listening to visiting writers in second grade, and wanting his own typewriter. He continued to write in junior high and took as many English classes as he could at Moorhead High, where he filled notebooks with his poetry.

Three student speakers, Andrea Kochensparger (a senior, Anthropology), Shouvik Bhattacharya (a senior, Physics), and Iwnetim Abate (a sophomore, Physics) discussed how students can motivate and prepare for attending an academic or a professional conference. All of them participated at the Student Academic Conference at MSUM this spring, and in addition, attended a professional/academic meeting of their own field in different cities and states. Their thoughts summed up as follows:

Motivation:

• To become more familiar with the work of those already prominent or rising within their academic/professional fields.
• To listen and grasp the new points of view.
• If you want to become effective in your chosen careers, then you need to think of beyond the classroom and gain real world experience. It expands our knowledge and makes us stand out on grad and job applications.
• To start a network of peers and others with whom you share your common interest.

Planning:

Get passes and hotel rooms in advance. Check with your respective department and the Office of Student Activities, if you need any financial assistance. For example, Bhattacharya’s APS Annual March Meeting was sponsored by the Department of Physics & Astronomy (MSUM), the Dean’s Student Travel Grant from the College of Social and Natural Sciences (MSUM), the Office of Student Activities (OSA),MSUM, and the National Society of Physics Students. Before going to a conference spend sometime on the itinerary to ensure whether any speech overlaps.Remember that you will have limited time. And once you’re seated in a less interesting one, it will be too late to move on to an alternate one.

The Takeaway Message:

Apply what you have learned to future assignments and classes. Departments will be happier to fund student activities when they see positive results. A few students take the initiative to go to academic events so your attendance sets you apart from your peers from other schools. Please encourage others to participate.

Eighteen people die each day waiting for an organ, but just one organ and tissue donor can save up to 60 lives. MSUM’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is working with two local organizations, Alexa’s Hope and LifeSource, to generate more awareness about organ and tissue donation and to in turn, hopefully get more registered donors.

There will be an organ donor panel on April 30 at 7 p.m, in the Comstock Memorial Union at MSUM. At the event local families will speak about how organ and tissue donation has affected them. This event is free and open to the public. To learn more about organ donation, or Alexa’s hope and LifeSource visit www.unos.org, www.alexashope.org, and www.life-source.org. PRSSA would like to thank Treasure Island Coins, and Vision Bank for their sponsorship for this event.

Positive Reactions is a student run PR agency at MSUM.

More than a dozen professionals representing the fields of accounting, business, computer science, construction management, healthcare, mass communications, operations management and paralegal will speak in College for Business and Industry classes throughout the morning.

The public is invited to the free, noon panel discussion on workplace ethics in the Center for Business 111.

“We discuss theory in the classroom, but hearing from professionals in various disciplines is how we really learn about ethics in the workplace,” said Marsha Weber, Dean of the College of Business & Industry. “Students can ask pointed questions and learn from our guest speakers who will talk about ethical dilemmas they face daily.”

“Eventually we’re going to be the professionals having to make ethical decisions,” said Anna Hansen a senior mass communications major. “I’m glad we get the chance to learn from example and see the application, not just read about it in class.”

MSUM Physics & Astronomy Seminar Series Presents:
Yes We Can -Do Theory In Membrane Biophysics

Sylvio May, Associate Professor
Department of Physics, North Dakota State University

Friday, March 8, 2013
3:00-3:50 p.m.
325 Hagen Hall

In this talk I will argue that the biophysics of lipid membranes is a very susceptible field for doing theoretical research (yes, using paper and pencil), even for undergraduate students. The reason is that there are plenty of relevant problems that require creativity and ideas rather than fancy mathematics (ok, some math skills can be useful). Moreover, the field is interdisciplinary and developing fast – not surprisingly because lipid membranes are central to many biological, technological, and pharmaceutical processes. I plan to highlight some “hot” research fields such as the search for alternative resistance-free antibiotics, the design of lipid-based DNA carriers for gene therapy, and the entry of some viruses into cells. In the main part of the talk I will illustrate how “doing theory” actually works. To this end, I will discuss a simple method for calculating electrostatic membrane properties.

The nurses joined the MEDICO medical team in Managua then headed up north to Jalapa where care was focused on children with handicaps and their families. Health education was also done at multiple schools and the women’s shelter. The students did an outstanding job and served over 600 patients. This was Bergland’s 14th year taking nursing students.

Along with this being the 50th year of hosting this great event it’s also a record number of international students on our campus. This semester we have a total of 430 enrolled international students from 59 different countries and 65 international students on post completion work authorization. Our top countries are Nepal, Nigeria, Republic of Korea, Japan, and China.

Our first international student came to MSUM in 1951 from Nigeria. All documentation was type or hand written and mailed from and to the student. How times have changed over the years.

Remember to mark this date on your calendar: April 6 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Comstock Memorial Union ballroom.

The MSUM SPS chapter belongs to Zone 11, which encompasses 5 states: Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa. The last zone meet-up was held at UW-River Falls on Oct. 29-30, 2010.

The meeting will start on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Science Lab 104. David Weinrich, the former President of the International Planetarium Society and the present Director of the MSUM Planetarium will give the opening talk on The Modern Planetarium- a digital, immersive, data visualization experience at 7 p.m. in Science Lab 104. This talk is free and open to public. Later in the evening, the meeting attendees will have an opportunity to see Galileo, a full dome movie, at the planetarium. Regular viewers are also welcome to attend the movie show, but tickets are limited. On Saturday, several posters and oral presentations are scheduled (from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.) at the Science Lab atrium. Anyone is welcome to attend those sessions. The meet-up will end at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 2 with the closing talk by Dr. Matthew Craig, Chair, Department of Physics & Astronomy at MSUM. The MSUM chapter members are excited to meet with new students and expand their horizons this meet-up.

The MSUM SPS chapter has been very active for the past two and a half years. Last fall, the MSUM chapter sent two students (Pragalv Karki and Andrew Larson) to attend the Quadrennial Physics Congress in Orlando, Florida, at which Karki presented his senior year project on Helmholtz coil. The SPS chapter teamed-up with the MSUM Planetarium last October and celebrated Halloween with a public outreach night named The Scary Sky Show and Spooky Science Night on October 27th. The chapter sponsored the MSUM University Physics Competition team (Meredith Mc Linn, Pragalv Karki and Shouvik Bhattacharya) in mid-November. The chapter also presented their Second Annual Physics Demo Show this past February (February 17, 2013).

The Society of Physics Students is a sister organization of American Institute of Physics. The mission statement of the Society of Physics Students reads as follow: “The Society of Physics Students (SPS) is a professional association explicitly designed for students. Membership, through collegiate chapters, is open to anyone interested in physics. The only requirement for membership is that you be interested in physics. Besides physics majors, our members include majors in chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, mathematics, medicine, and other fields.”
