Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)– Most musicians hoping to make it big can only dream of one day signing with a record label. But a student run group at MSUM is turning that dream into a reality for local musicians. Behind the books and hours of studying.

Lies a group thats turning the eyes, and ears, of everyone who stops to listen.

Rachael Goers- Undeclared Records President: “Our program and even just Undeclared Records is very unique. That’s actually why I chose to go to MSUM.”

Undeclared Records- It’s MSUM’s student run record label.

Giving these aspiring entertainers hands on experience, in the real world music industry.

Ryan Jackson- MSUM Associate Music Professor: “They need to be very well adjusted for what’s to come and I think we do that here very well.”

From rock to acoustic.

Eric Jensen- Undeclared Records Upcoming President: “I have been doing a lot of work in hip hop.”

Album art to promotions, they do it all.

Goers: “Everything is recorded by students, and all of our artists this year were students or have been students.”

Bringing sound straight from the studio.

To the soundboard, where the best of the best ultimately land a track on the album.

Jensen: “Really exciting being able to be a part of something that a lot of people would love to be a part of but don’t necessarily have the opportunity.”

Jackson: “When they come in the door they’re students. By the time they leave, they’re all my kids, and they’re all extremely well trained professionals.”

All with the heart and soul to take their talents to the next level.

Undeclared Records is made up of musicians in MSUM’s Music and Entertainment Industry Student Association. The label just released its fourth album.

During this time, he lived in the small rural village of Kopeiya at the Dagbe Art and Culture Center which was created by a family of master drummers from the area to spur research, maintain traditional art forms, and provide financial support for the region.

The music and dancing that he learned will be shared with members of the MSUM community via the MSUM World Music and Percussion Ensemble, “Fuego Tropical,” this coming fall. During the fall semester, the ensemble will be devoted to learning the dances, songs, and drumming that Dr. Williams learned while in Ghana. The ensemble will also explore the music of Trinidadian carnival which Dr. Williams experienced at the beginning of his sabbatical while participating in the legendary “Panorama” steelband competition in Trinidad.

By Meredith Wathne

The deep amber color, the twisted tight strings and the soothing sounds that resonate after a legato bow stroke. It’s hard not to be romantic about the violin. Music education and music performance major Tara Cherry found romance and has been in a serious relationship with the violin since she was eight years old.

“I love everything about the violin,” Cherry said. “I had to push my parents to take lessons; it wasn’t the other way around.”

The Missoula, Mont., native will present on Samuel Barber’s violin concerto and Edward Elgar’s violin sonata because she will perform them at her senior recital in the fall. The research she’s conducted on these pieces will ensure she knows them top to bottom and front to back.

Barber and Elgar are both composers from a similar time period with different styles, but, “They have a lot of similarities in the two pieces, which is really surprising,” Cherry said.

Cherry’s presentation will touch on three main points—the similarities and differences between the styles and harmonic elements (tonal and atonal), the differences between the composers, and the history of the pieces.

Cherry hopes to inform her audience about the two composers and build a connection to the styles and different parts of the pieces themselves.

“They are two pieces that people do not really know about if they are not in the music world,” Cherry said.

During the conference she will present a variety of musical selections available to help showcase the style and history she studied. However, instead of having an audio file of the track, Cherry will play them on her violin, creating a more personal connection.

Cherry aspires to take her passion for the craft and share it with others by teaching.

A reception will follow the evening performance.

Hong is considered a master of the pipa, a pear-shaped string instrument much like a lute. She graduated with honors from China’s premier music school, the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where she studied with pipa master Lin Shicheng. In both China and the U.S., Hong has received numerous top awards and honors, and was the first traditional musician to be awarded the prestigious Bush Artist Fellowship. In 2008, she became the only musician in any genre to win four McKnight Artist Fellowships for Performing Musicians. Hong has performed throughout Europe, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, China, and the U.S. in solo concerts and with symphony orchestras, jazz musicians, and musicians from other cultures.

China’s foremost music publication, People’s Music, wrote of Hong that “like the famous Luoyang peony, she has gradually emerged as the best of all beautiful flowers…her performance has extremely strong artistic appeal and belongs under the category of ‘fine wine’…the more you listen, the more beautiful it gets…”

The lecture and performance are free and open to the public.
