Linda Houts-Smith, Languages and Cultures, gave a two-part presentation entitled “More Often Than Most: The Frequency Rates of Next Speaker Selection Practices in Conversation” at the 2013 Hawaii University International Conference for Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences held Jan. 6-8. Her presentations were two facets of a larger study; one presentation was about frequency rates of next speaker selection practices and the other was on the frequency rates of topic management practices.

Houts-Smith also presented a workshop entitled “It’s the language, stupid! Understanding what English learners need and how to give it to them” at the 2013 Hawaii International Conference on Education held Jan. 5-9. Houts-Smith explained the role of the ESL teacher in a U.S. k-12 setting, specifically on what is essential for English learners (ELs). Her presentation shows how the WIDA Consortium standards address these essentials and how their absence affects an EL’s ability to understand other concepts.

Benjamin Smith has been selected as the 2012-13 recipient of the Dille Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award at Minnesota State University Moorhead.

Smith will present “The Gift of Language” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18 in Room 103 of the MSUM library. The lecture will address the unique human ability to choose what language we use in a given context based on pragmatic determinants.

With examples from his recent pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago and his research on the history of the Spanish language, Smith offers suggestions on how to improve intercultural interaction through key cultural and linguistic competencies.

From Sept. 1 to Oct. 12, 2011 Smith walked the 1,000-year-old route to the tomb of St. James in Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia. He either slept in a tent or overnighted in albergues, or inns, sponsored by monasteries and local Catholic churches. St. James is considered the patron saint of Spain, and the monument that marks his resting place is the third most visited shrine in Christianity after Jerusalem and Rome.

Each year, the Dille Fund for Excellence Committee and the President select one MSUM faculty member to receive the Dille Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award. The Dille Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award is one of the highest honors Minnesota State University Moorhead bestows to its faculty. Honorees receive a $1,200 honorarium and commemorative desk clock in a brief ceremony before they present the annual Dille Distinguished Faculty Lecture to an audience of campus and community members.

The Dille Fund for Excellence is a permanent endowment established in 1994 by the MSUM Alumni Foundation, through the generosity of MSUM Alumni and Friends, to honor the University’s former president, Roland Dille and his wife, Beth Dille. The endowment supports annual grants and the Dille Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award.

Dr. Benjamin Smith, Languages and Cultures, attended the Minnesota Manuscript Research Laboratory sponsored by the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library (HMML) at St. John’s University and the Center for Medieval Studies at the University of Minnesota from June 3-8. He spent most of the week working on a manuscript fragment from a 13th century copy of St. Isidore’s Etymologiae, a sort of medieval encyclopedia dealing with subjects from common garden-variety plants to monsters and fantastical beings. The manuscript fragment had been separated from the original work centuries before it came into the possession of the Steiner collection at the HMML and at some point suffered further damage due to part of the text being excised. Smith catalogued the parts that were lost and connected the fragment with additional copies of this manuscript held in the special collections of European libraries.

He will talk about the experience and his research Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Library Auditorium.

From Sept. 1 to Oct. 12, Smith walked the 1,000-year-old route to the tomb of St. James in Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia. St. James is considered the patron saint of Spain, and the monument that marks his resting place is the third most visited shrine in Christianity after Jerusalem and Rome.

Smith’s hike was part of a semester-long sabbatical leave from his position at MSUM. His research during the hike focused on original manuscripts associated with key sites along the Camino de Santiago. “These foundational texts are hallmarks in the evolution of the Spanish language,” said Smith, whose principal interest is the linguistic history of Spain. “Walking the Camino de Santiago was a way to interact intimately with 1,000 years of the history of the Spanish language as it sprouted from Latin.”
