Healing through Writing: A Poet’s Perspective

In many instances, the act of writing is connected to the spiritual aspects of release, surrender, and healing. Zepper will read his poetry and discuss the parallels between the creative act and the spiritual one. A few years ago, he was ready to walk away from creative writing and public readings completely. He will share with you why he is pursuing his craft in a renewed, energizing light.

If you feel strongly about which planet is your favorite, come cast your vote at the Favorite Planet Competition Thursday, June 20, at the MSUM Planetarium.

The Favorite Planet Competition is the first children’s public show of the season. The doors open at 10:40 a.m. Special guests Kristin Brevik and Carrie Leopold, Solar System Ambassadors through NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s volunteer outreach program, will be ready with activities to get you started thinking about your favorite planet, including feeling how much a can of Coke weighs on another planet and finding out how much your weight changes if you could stand on another planet.

At 11 a.m., the planetarium tour of the planets begins, hosted by Planetarium Assistant Scarlet Gray Bernard, also a Solar System Ambassador. After touring the planets, visitors may cast their votes for their favorite planet.

The summer children’s series will feature one event per month. The second show will be “Mooniverse” on July 18 at 11 a.m., exploring the moons of the solar system. The third show will be August 8 at 11 a.m., about meteors, in preparation for the Perseid Meteor Shower in August. Planetarium admission is $5 per adult, $2.50 per child, senior, and Tri-College student.

The Solar System Ambassadors Program of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory offers information and excitement about real missions that explore our solar system. Volunteer ambassadors in communities throughout the country are selected by JPL based on their backgrounds and on their plans for public outreach activities. JPL provides ambassadors with educational materials and training. However, the opinions of Ambassadors are not necessarily those of NASA or JPL.

More information about the Solar System Ambassadors Program.

JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif.

Lieutenant Governor Yvonne Prettner Solon, the Combined Charities Board of Directors, and charitable Federations have recognized MSUM for achieving an outstanding employee participation rate during the 2012 State Employees’ Combined Charities Campaign.

The Combined Charities Campaign recognized three levels of achievement for employee participation in the payroll contribution program: Bronze, for agencies with 10 to 15 percent participation; Silver for agencies with 15 to 20 percent participation; and Gold, for agencies with 20 percent or higher participation. During the 2012 campaign, MSUM achieved the Gold level of recognition with 24 percent participation, the highest of any MnSCU campus.

As coordinator, Deb Lewis, helped raise over $882,000, an outstanding amount given the current economic times.

Brian Zaidman, Combined Charities Campaign Board of Directors, said, “Your willingness to pitch in and contribute your time and talent to the Combined Charities Campaign made a difference, not just in achieving this financial goal, but in helping to better the lives of countless individuals. You have truly demonstrated the spirit of our campaign slogan, “State Employees Caring for Minnesota.”

Congratulations and thank you to all who participated!

Two recent graduates of MSUM’s Art & Design Department are part of a six-member team that created The Abettor’s Letters, a computer game that teaches users how to speak French. Kyle Weik, 2012, is the UI (user interface) graphic designer, and McCal Joy Johnson, 2013, is the scene development artist.

The Abettor’s Letters is a point-and-click adventure featuring a complete French curriculum. The player assumes the identity of Secret Agent Carsen Brooks and learns just enough French at each level to pass as a French citizen and thwart the next terrorist attack. The setting of the game was inspired by La Belle Epoque, the most iconic and romantic period in French history.

The Abettor’s Letters is currently being developed for iPad and PC. The team of writers, designers, artists, gamers, and French education enthusiasts are using Kickstarter this July to raise money to program one complete episode that people can try at no cost.

On the game’s website, the developers state that they “are committed to using local talent and businesses, whenever possible, to make this game come to life. We are all personally committed to youth, education, and art, and we look forward to serving the Fargo-Moorhead community in these areas once successful.” To learn more about the game, go to www.theabettorsletters.com.

Internships in Washington

The intern program in Senator Franken’s office strives to fully immerse the interns in the legislative process. Interns will be paired with a legislative assistant who matches their issue area of interest, and will assist this staffer with policy research, as well as attend committee hearings and other Senate events. They will be a vital component of keeping the office functional, by assisting with the constituent mail process and managing the front desk.

In addition to assisting the office, interns will receive unique career development opportunities. Through working with legislative staff and meeting with senior staff and the Senator, interns will be able to make an informed decision about what areas of political work interest them. By making full use of the career development courses offered in the Senate, interns will know how best to succeed in a political career in the area that they enjoy the most.

Communications Intern (Washington Based)

The communications intern is actively involved in translating Senate policy and legislation into Minnesota news. The intern will learn how a communications shop operates and interacts with the other departments to create a succinct message. The position entails attending daily communications department meetings, being responsible for aggregating news articles into daily clips for staff, media monitoring, helping with research projects, and some writing of news advisories and press releases. Minnesotans will be given priority. Strong writing skills and ability to work in a high-pressure environment are a must. Early risers are encouraged to apply.

Internships in Minnesota

The internship role in Senator Franken’s Minnesota offices requires individuals who are professional, articulate, and responsible with an interest in government service. Based on the individual’s availability, interests, and skills, interns will work with outreach staff, case workers, communications staff, and administrative staff. Interns will serve as a vital component of keeping the office functional by assisting with the constituent mail process and managing the front desk. Senator Franken offers internships in the following Minnesota offices: Saint Paul, Duluth and Saint Cloud.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Answering phones and assisting constituents with requests

Assisting constituent and field staff with casework and related tasks

Assisting outreach staff with research, event planning and other work

Attending meetings with and for field and outreach staff

Assisting the scheduling and communications staff

Other assigned tasks based on the needs of the staff and office

In addition to assisting the office, interns will receive unique career development opportunities. Through working with field, casework, and other state staff, and meeting with the Senator, interns will be able to make an informed decision about what areas of political work interest them and gain valuable skills that will prepare them to succeed in a political and professional career.
