Brian Wisenden, biosciences, had a paper accepted for publication in the “Journal of Animal Ecology” this week. The paper’s first author is MSUM biosciences (EEB) alum Tony Stumbo who just finished his MSc at Lethbridge University, Alberta. His thesis was nominated for Lethbridge University’s 2012 Gold Medal for outstanding graduate student of the year.

Another co-author, Clayton James, did a portion of his MSc at MSUM and a portion at Lethbridge University. James graduated in 2008 and now works as a fisheries biologist for the Alberta Conservation Association.

Cam Goater is a collaborator of Wisenden. This is their 5th publication together.

The full citation of the latest paper is:
Stumbo A, James C, Goater C, Wisenden BD. 2012. Shoaling as an anti-parasite defence in fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) exposed to trematode cercariae. Journal of Animal Ecology.

With summer semester here, Travis Dolence is offering assistance with distance education classes. As the Distance Learning Librarian, Dolence is dedicated to helping you and your students locate quality research materials and assistance.

Creating online course-specific “pathfinders” or help sheets for Library resources. These online help sheets can be tailored for any class and can included web resources, library databases, books, etc. (see examples at http://libguides.mnstate.edu/)

Acting as library liaison for distance learning students. Many students appreciate having a \”point-person\” to help them with questions and direct them to assistance.

Collaborating in course management software (e.g., Moodle or D2L). For example, I am happy to be added to the class as an instructor, so that I can directly assist students with research questions via message boards, chats, etc.

Providing library/information literacy instruction. There are several models that I can use to provide instruction to distance learners:

I can create an online learning object (tutorial, podcast, video) to assist students with their research (see the online tutorial used for CMST100 here.)

I can meet online with students, individually or as a class, to help them learn how to use databases, evaluate resources, etc. The Livingston Lord Library has web conferencing software that allows me to share my computer\’s desktop with students while talking to them via phone or internet, making this process easier than ever.

For faculty using ITV, I can come to your classroom and make a presentation.

Your students my find the links on this page to be useful.

If you need assistance, contact Travis Dolence at 218.477.2358 or travis.dolence@mnstate.edu.

Tuition increase for full-time students held to $171 at state colleges and $285 at state universities

Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) Board of Trustees will consider a proposed fiscal year 2013 budget at its Tuesday, May 15 meeting that holds tuition increases to $171 for full-time undergraduate students at the state colleges and $285 at the state universities. Under the proposed budget, full-time students at the 24 state colleges would pay average tuition of $4,815 (+3.7 percent) annually and full-time students at the seven state universities average tuition of $6,782 (+4.4 percent). The proposed average annual full-time tuition increase across all MnSCU colleges and universities is $193 (3.9 percent).

“The proposed budget advances the goals outlined in the Strategic Framework adopted by the Board of Trustees in January,” said MnSCU Chancellor Steven Rosenstone. “Through our ongoing efforts to control costs, improve efficiency and increase productivity, we remain the state’s most affordable post-secondary option. Our colleges and universities have worked hard to minimize tuition and fee increases, while maintaining an extraordinary educational experience for our students.”

MnSCU colleges and universities have reallocated more than $76 million in 2012-2013 to invest in high priority areas, add teaching and student services positions, start new programs in high-demand fields and balance budgets with only moderate tuition increases.

Need-based financial aid programs (grants and loans) help students pay for their education. In FY2011 (the most recent data available), 61 percent of students enrolled in state colleges and 64 percent of students enrolled in state universities received some kind of financial aid. For those students receiving state grants, half of the proposed tuition and fee increase in FY2013 will be offset by an increase in those grants.

State funding per MnSCU student has declined 45 percent (adjusted for inflation) since FY2000. Over this same period, efficiencies have reduced the inflation-adjusted cost of educating a MnSCU student by 10 percent.

The proposed tuition adjustment for FY2013 maintains MnSCU’s position as the state’s highest value and most affordable higher education option.

Tuition Comparison

FY2012 Est. Annual FY2013

Tuition Increase Tuition

MnSCU Colleges $4,644 $171 $4,815

MnSCU State Universities $6,497 $285 $6,782

University of Minnesota $11,650 $410 $12,060

Private Four-Year Colleges $32,349 $1,466 $33,815

1 University of Minnesota tuition is for the Twin Cities, College of Liberal Arts, exclusive of fees charged by individual colleges.
2 Private 4-year averages are based on information on tuition & fees reported by the MN Private College Council for member institutions for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years.

The Board of Trustees will consider final action on the proposed FY2013 budget at its June meeting.

Officials from the 8th Annual Fargo Marathon are still short of their participation goal of 10,000 people for this year’s Friday Night 5K. The plea is going out to EVERYONE in the region to jump in and crawl, walk or run this annual 3.1 mile event. This year’s goal of 10,000 people is significant because it means that the organization can purchase 1,000 pairs of shoes for kids in the Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo schools via a matching donation from Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota and the Dakota Medical Foundation. Calling all DRAGONS to sign up Thursday and Friday at the FargoDome!

MOORHEAD – Twenty-three years ago, the prognosis for Kent Wright graduating from college – let alone his odds at medical school – did not seem particularly good.

By: Marino Eccher, INFORUM

MOORHEAD – Twenty-three years ago, the prognosis for Kent Wright graduating from college – let alone his odds at medical school – did not seem particularly good.

He first enrolled at Minnesota State University Moorhead (Moorhead State at the time) in 1988 as a pre-veterinary student, but he lasted just two years.

Class, he said, was not a high priority.

“My academic career was a victim of my social life,” he said. “Too much partying on the mind, I guess.”

So he quit and spent the next two decades running the family dairy farm near Sebeka. He always liked science – and even learned to do embryo transplants on his own cows – but going back to school seemed like too scary and dramatic of a step.

That changed in 2009, when the bottom fell out of the dairy market and Wright found himself selling milk for less money than his father sold it 30 years earlier. With the industry making the future uncertain, Wright and his wife, Heidi, figured the timing would never be better to take the leap.

“We felt if we were ever going to make a change, it had to be right now,” Heidi Wright said.

Today, Kent, now 43, will graduate from MSUM with a degree in biology. Instead of picking up his veterinary studies, he’s taking his family to Dominica in the Caribbean, where he’ll enroll in Ross University’s medical school.

The change in direction was prompted by his family’s experiences with a fertility doctor a decade ago, who helped him and his wife have two children.

“Everything I was doing with the cattle seemed important up to that time,” he said. “All the cattle embryos in the world could never create the kind of emotion that one doctor did for us.”

Moorhead – A fierce competitor on the track juxtaposed with a sweet personality off it, Anna VanWechel finds a way to add a dash of flair when she prepares for races.

The Minnesota State Moorhead senior likes to spice things up with her fingernails, specifically wearing different bold colors for meets.

“If I have a bad race with a certain color, I have to retire that color,” VanWechel said with a chuckle. “I like bright, obnoxious colors.”

VanWechel hasn’t been forced to retire many nail colors this spring. Most changes in shade have come because she likes the variety. For the record, VanWechel has a teal hue with sparkles ready for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference track and field outdoor championships, which run Friday and Saturday at the Community Bowl in Bismarck.
