Saturday night, accessorize with your finest bath towel and head to the MSUM Planetarium for a goofy night under the stars.

The Minnesota State University-Moorhead Planetarium is hosting an event for intergalactic hitchhikers at 7 p.m. for Towel Day, May 25.

Towel Day (towelday.org) is an annual memorial day for fans of Douglas Adams, author of the sci-fi comedy series, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Since towels are “about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have,” planetarium visitors are encouraged to bring their towels to receive a discount and participate in a contest for the coolest towel.

Solar System Ambassador Scarlet Gray Bernard will present a (Hitchhiker’s) Guide to the Galaxy in the planetarium, guiding guests on a tour of our place in the galaxy, discussing how we know what we know, and enhancing the presentation with the wit of Douglas Adams.

Besides a guide to the galaxy and a coolest towel contest, visitors are encouraged to compose some very painful poetry if they want to participate in a Vogon poetry contest, and to brace themselves for a Total Perspective Vortex to see “how vastly, hugely, mindbogglingly big [space] is.”

The planetarium has an admission rate of $2 per person, $1 per hitchhiker with a towel. Babel fish will be provided. More information can be found on the planetarium’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/msumplanetarium.

The Solar System Ambassadors Program of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory offers information and excitement about real missions that explore our solar system. Volunteer ambassadors in communities throughout the country are selected by JPL based on their backgrounds and on their plans for public outreach activities. JPL provides ambassadors with educational materials and training. However, the opinions of Ambassadors are not necessarily those of NASA or JPL. Further information about the Solar System Ambassadors Program is available at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/ambassador. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif.

Geoscience students Stephen Kunz, Adam Marks, Jon Sands, and their advisor Dr. Karl W. Leonard presented the paper “Sequence Stratigraphy of the Tyler Formation (Lower Pennsylvanian/Morrowan) in the Williston Basin, North Dakota” at the annual North Central Section of GSA meeting in Kalamazoo, Michigan on May 3.

Leonard and his students have been examining core samples and fossils from the Tyler Formation from the subsurface of western North Dakota to determine variations in rock types and fossil assemblages in response to global climate change over 300 million years ago. This study may have economic implications since the Tyler is often referred to as the “Baby Bakken”.

Since 2002, twenty-six economics majors have presented papers at the Issues in Political Economy (IPE) undergraduate research sessions hosted by the Eastern Economics Association. The IPE sessions attract students from all over the country and from institutions including the likes of MIT, Smith College, Colby College, and the College of Wooster, to name a few.

Professor Stephen DeLoach, co-head of IPE for the last 15 years, recently sent a letter commenting on MSU Moorhead Economics students’ research presentations at the IPE sessions. DeLoach writes, “I have personally observed the quality and professionalism of (MSU Moorhead) students and can testify to the impressive work they continue to do.”

DeLoach continues, “Minnesota State (University Moorhead) students are always among the most well prepared of the students to attend our conference. Moreover, the quality of their research is consistently high.”

To conclude, DeLoach said, “Since 2002, when they started coming, 548 different students have participated in the conference, from 60 different colleges and universities. While most of these students hail from more prestigious schools with arguably better academic credentials, the students from Minnesota State (University Moorhead) are routinely among the best at the conference. This is a strong testament to the dedication and hard work of its faculty.”
