Dr. Brandt is keynote presenter at upcoming conference

Dr. Camille Brandt, School of Teaching and Learning, is one of the keynote presenters at the North Dakota Council of Administrators in Special Education Paraeducator Conference on June 20. She will be presenting strategies for working with students on the autism spectrum.

Lacey Saga appointed Director of Early Education Center

Following a search and interviews with the campus community, Lacey Saga has been appointed Director of Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Early Education Center. Saga received her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and a master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from MSUM. She has served as Interim Director of the EEC since 2009, after serving two years as a teacher at the Center. She has also served as an adjunct instructor in MSUM’s College of Education and Human Services. As Interim Director, she successfully led the Center’s transition to a 12-month calendar, which has enhanced both accessibility and fiscal sustainability. Her appointment is effective immediately.

HSAD student helps with Make a Wish

Health Services Administration sophomore, Bailey Beauclair, was interviewed by area TV stations for her help with Make a Wish for Northern Cass siblings. Beauclair was there as part of community service required by the MSUM HSAD program.

Grineski presents paper at international conference

Steve Grineski, School of Teaching and Learning, presented a paper at the 15th Annual International Conference on Research in Education, sponsored by the Athens Institute for Education and Research, and held in Athens, Greece. The paper was titled, “We were pretty darn good”: A social history of the preparation of rural school teachers, 1900-1950.

Steve Grineski, STL, recently authored “We were pretty darn good” : A history of rural education in America. The book was published by the History Publishing Company in Palisades, N.Y., and features a case study of the Moorhead State Teachers College nationally-recognized Department of Rural Education.

MSUM hosted a Transition Conference for area high school students

MSUM, in collaboration with Clay County Community Transition Interagency Committee and North Dakota Region V Transition Community of Practice, held a two-day conference in the Comstock Memorial Union. The conference involved high school youth with disabilities, their educators, and parents and sought to educate participants about transitioning to life after high school. High school students participated in breakout sessions focused on college life, advocacy, and fitness activities. Over seventy MSUM education majors also volunteered during the two days with some MSUM students participating in panel discussions on college life.

The panel will be held April 25 from 6 – 8 p.m. in CMU 227.

Professors from various departments including: Psychology, Speech Language Hearing Science, and Business will address the evolving workforce and give their perspectives of how to successfully respond to the diverse work environment. Pizza will be provided!

MSUM students honored at Rape and Abuse Crisis Center Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

Aaron Lund, 2013 recipient of RACC’s Healing the Hurt award, was among the MSUM students and alumni honored at the annual Rape and Abuse Crisis Center Volunteer appreciation dinner April 16.

The Healing the Hurt award is a special recognition to an individual or group that has extended extra effort toward ending violence and abuse and whose actions have positively impacted the lives of those victimized by personal violence.

Lund has been “healing the hurt” through his extraordinary passion and commitment to organizing and facilitating MSUM’s “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event and in the creation of “Extraordinary Gentlemen,” an MSUM men’s student organization dedicated to ending violence and abuse.

The Healthcare Leadership Organization will be in the CMU this week to register students and staff for the blood drive done by United Blood Services.

There will be a table set up in the CMU this week to register. Register on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon, Wednesday from 2-4 p.m., or on Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon.

United Blood Services will be here on May 2 from noon to 4 p.m. in the CMU, room 203.

“School-Age Therapy for Stuttering from the Other Side of the Therapy Table” Q&A Session/Discussion today

This event, hosted by the Fargo-Moorhead Chapter of the National Stuttering Association, will focus on experiences with speech therapy for stuttering. Parents, SLPs, and members of the community are invited to ask members of the NSA questions on topics related to stuttering and stuttering therapy for school-age children. There will be door prizes and refreshments. This event will be held in the South Porch of Murray Hall, MSUM Campus, Thursday, April 18 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Steve Grineski, School of Teaching and Learning, co-presented a paper with Julie Landsman titled, “Follow the White Supremacist Money: Education Funding as Perpetuator of White Privilege and How Educators Can Work for Change.” The paper was presented at the 14th Annual White Privilege Conference: The Color of Money- Reclaiming our Humanity held in Seattle, Wash.

As has been true the past two years, individual books containing the abstracts, presentation schedules, etc. will not be available at the conference. We encourage you to look over the information you need on the SAC website before you come. Posters with presentation information, organized by time and organized by department, will be posted in the CMU. If you have questions, please come to the registration table.

Everything you need for the conference is at www.mnstate.edu/sac including:
• Schedule of the day
• Schedule of presentations (searchable and sortable by name, title, keyword, department, time, room, format or advisor)
• Volunteer schedule
• Archived searchable pdfs of past conferences (still a little rough, but there)
• Information on the keynote speaker (Ryan Sylvester) and panelists from each college
• Preview Guide (deeper background on featured presenters and the keynote speaker)
• Complete abstract listings, by department

Copies of the VIP book. While not economically feasible for the SAC to print the VIP book for every presenter, advisor, and audience member, departments or individuals who wish to purchase a keepsake copy of the preview guide and/or the complete abstract listing may do so through Copy2Print by filling out this form (about $12.50 total cost for both).

Finally, students value feedback from professors in their own discipline. Even if you have not volunteered to work at the SAC, please try to make it to the conference at some point during the day and attend a few presentations/visit a few posters. Formal feedback forms are available at the registration desk (which students seem to value more highly than casual interactions).
