The Moorhead artist teamed up with Prairie Public Television for “Faces of the Oil Patch.” Gudmundson’s still photos are featured throughout the documentary as a way of introducing subjects.

Some of the photos are displayed at North Dakota State University’s Memorial Union Gallery, with a reception at 5 tonight. The exhibit will eventually travel around the state.

Following the reception, the documentary will be screened. It premieres on PPTV, Channel 13, at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

MSUM construction management students placed second at the 2012 Construction Management Quiz Bowl held at the Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis.

The team of Darren Dell, Danny Hawkins, Dan Watkins and Myles Anderson competed against seven other teams from the University of Minnesota, North Hennepin Community College, MSU Mankato and University of Wisconsin-Stout. It was a three round, Jeopardy-style quiz bowl challenge, and the MSUM team triumphed over MSU Mankato, North Hennepin Community College and University of Minnesota-Minneapolis, placing second to Stout.

They were quizzed on everything from safety, surveying and scheduling, to estimating, contract documents and soils. Despite not prepping for the event, the team made an impressive showing.

Dell credits their performance to the construction management program’s thorough and broad education in the construction process and access to leading construction software that’s used in the industry.

“Our professors have worked in the field as project managers, bringing real life experience to the classroom, and they integrate that experience into every class,” Dell said.

“That’s why we have the best program in the area,” Anderson added.

MSUM achieved accreditation of its business programs by AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) in 2010. This is the most prestigious level of accreditation available to business schools internationally. As a result of this achievement, the school was able to establish a chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma in 2011.

On Friday, April 20 an induction ceremony was held for 19 students joining Beta Gamma Sigma during the 2011-2012 academic year. The School of Business congratulates these students who join an expanding worldwide network of more than 625,000 outstanding business professionals who have earned recognition through lifetime membership in Beta Gamma Sigma. This is a very selective honor as only students ranking in the top 10 percent of the baccalaureate and top 20 percent of graduate programs at schools accredited by AACSB International are eligible for this invitation.

The following is a list of the 2011-2012 class of new Beta Gamma Sigma members:

Sara Beattie; Joel Becvar; Alexander Hajicek; Hae Seok Lee; Heidi Lensing; Bradley Ostendorf; Ashley Rasmussen; Jill Steinwand; Sean Templeton; Lindsey Thymian; Andrew Alstadt; Cory Black; Ryan Daly; Timothy Erickson; Christopher Karsky; Angela Kettering; Randy Larson; Allan Nunez; and Jenna Thompson

In addition, Tammy Miller, CEO of Border States Electric and MSUM alum, was inducted as the Chapter Honoree as a professional who has furthered the ideals of the Society through outstanding business and managerial leadership. Timothy Erickson, a Business Administration major, was selected as the Beta Gamma Sigma scholarship recipient for 2012-2013.

Friday, April 13, Chad Rettke, senior project manager at Kraus-Anderson Construction Company, visited Minnesota State University Moorhead’s construction management offices to donate items to the department, such as hard hats, coffee cups, literature and information about their company.

Provost Anne Blackhurst accepted the gifts, along with College of Business & Industry Dean Marsha Weber, and construction management faculty member Norma Andersen.

The gifts were given as a way to inform MSUM construction management students of Kraus-Anderson and the opportunities they offer.

Kraus-Anderson has hired multiple MSUM construction management majors for internships and full-time positions. “The ones that were interns that we hired full-time, the reason we kept them on full-time was the quality of education they’ve had and the skills that they bring to our company,” Rettke said. “We feel we can help them along and further their education, but they’ve got such a good baseline to start from, and that is certainly a positive that we at Kraus-Anderson view.”

Andersen said the construction management program values the relationship created between students and businesses in the industry. “Without them we don’t know if we’re preparing the students for the right things. We interact with the industry, get their input, get our students out working with them, and get feedback on their strengths and weaknesses. It helps us build our program.”

Engineering News-Record consistently ranks Kraus-Anderson among the top 50 Construction Management-at-Risk Firms in the United States. Their Minnesota base of operations is supplemented with regional offices.
