Wally Open fundraiser set for June 22

You are invited to play in the 2013 “Wally Open” Saturday, June 22 at Moorhead’s Village Green Golf Course. In its third year, this casual event is a fundraiser for a scholarship fund at Minnesota State University Moorhead.

The Dave Wallace Scholarship was created in honor of Dave Wallace, a well-known local artist who graduated from MSUM, spent part of his career as a full-time potter, and for the last 20 years served as the university’s art director.

The scholarship fund will allow a $500 scholarship to be awarded each year to an MSUM ceramics student. The goal is to raise $10,000 for a permanent endowment. Read the rest of this entry →

MSUM Art & Design faculty exhibition of work on display at the HoDo

An exhibition of work created by faculty members from the MSUM Department of Art & Design is now on display at the HoDo Restaurant in Fargo. The faculty were featured in an opening on Monday evening. Those faculty displaying work include Andrew Stark, Zhimin Guan, Loral Iverson-Hannaher, Brad Bachmeier, Carl Oltvedt, Jim Park, Allen Sheets, Kelli Sinner, and Naomi RaMona Schliesman. The exhibition will be available through July. The HoDo Restaurant is located at 101 Broadway in downtown Fargo.

Music professor to record with The Rose Ensemble

Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities, Daniel Mahraun, enters the recording studio next week with St. Paul-based early music group The Rose Ensemble. MOORHEAD – In just a few short years, the arc of Joshua Gates’ academic life has gone from meh to marvelous.

Gates’ identity at Mayville (N.D.) High School was as a football, basketball, track and baseball standout. But that didn’t transfer to the classroom.

He had a 2.5 grade-point average and was 47th out of a graduating class of 54 in 2009, he said. His college placement test scores were borderline.

Most subjects were tedious to Gates, but he loved history and has wanted to work in museums since he was a child – perhaps even the Smithsonian Institution, he told people. Read the rest of this entry →

Bachmeier’s work unveiled during Offutt Center for Business grand opening

Ceramic artist and art Professor Brad Bachmeier was commissioned to create a monumental 10′ x 7′ relief sculpture to commemorate the life and legacy of Ron Offutt, a 1964 Concordia alumnus who donated a substantial gift for the Concordia College Ron Offutt Center for Business. Bachmeier’s charge was to visually interpret and tell the story of Offutt, who is the founder and chairman of R.D. Offutt Co. and oversees an eight-state farming enterprise covering 160,000 acres, the largest potato farm operation in the country. In addition, Offutt owns RDO Equipment Company, the largest network of John Deere construction and agricultural equipment dealerships in the country. Read the rest of this entry →

An Evening of Dance

Red Weather 2013 release reading today

Please join the staff and contributors of MSUM’s annual journal of creative writing and visual art as they celebrate the print release of the 2013 issue of Red Weather.

A reading will be held Thursday, May 9 in room 203 of the Comstock Memorial Union from 7-9 p.m.

Copies will be available for purchase.

The reading is free and open to the public.

Ecce Gallery produces Timothy Ray exhibition catalogue

Zhimin Guan, Art, opens a solo show at ecce Art Gallery in Fargo June, 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. The gallery describes Guan’s exhibit as “Historical and expressionistic, Zhimin’s newest collection of watercolor and mixed media pieces are bringing his work into a fresh platform that successfully syncs form and content.” The gallery is located at 216 N Broadway in Fargo, and is open from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Richard Zinober’s play presented at Winona theater

English professor, Richard Zinober, had his play, Heretics, a winner of the 2013 Theatre du Mississippi playwriting competition, presented in staged readings at a theater in Winona this past Saturday and Sunday.

A drama about an abduction in a prairie town, Heretics was developed with the support of grants from Lake Region Arts Council and the MSUM Peer Review Committee.

Music alum chosen as 2013 University of Montevallo Scholar

Lori Neprud-Ardovino, music graduate 1984, was recently chosen to be the 2013 University of Montevallo University Scholar. The University Scholar is a faculty member who has excelled in scholarship/creative endeavors through national peer-review publications, grants, performances, shows, etc. The University Scholar is chosen by the University Scholar Selection Committee consisting of former recipients of the Scholar award.

Poet Zepper discusses writing with Moorhead High students

Kevin Zepper, associate professor of English at Minnesota State University Moorhead, shared his thoughts on writing poetry and all things creative with Moorhead High School creative writing students during presentations May 3.

Zepper, a Moorhead High graduate, told students that he became interested in writing in second grade.
