Bachmeier’s charge was to visually interpret and tell the story of Offutt, who is the founder and chairman of R.D. Offutt Co. and oversees an eight-state farming enterprise covering 160,000 acres, the largest potato farm operation in the country. In addition, Offutt owns RDO Equipment Company, the largest network of John Deere construction and agricultural equipment dealerships in the country.

The April 27, 2013 grand opening was a special day in the history of Concordia College. Not only was the newly renovated Offutt School of Business officially dedicated, billionaire philanthropist and former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates was part of the dedication festivities.

By Kalicia Kamranian

Young children grow to understand the world around them through trial and error. They fail forward to success. Freshman Meghan McLaughlin believes that as we age, the development of our creative minds decreases. McLaughlin will discuss this issuer in her SAC presentation, “Stepping Away from Creativity.”

Double majoring in studio arts, with an emphasis in sculpture, and theater arts, with an emphasis in theater technology and design, McLaughlin clearly has a passion for creativity. She likes people to see different perspectives in both art and life. Her presentation is inspired by TED talks, a series of documentaries based in the U.K., and by the late philosopher Alan Watts, from whom McLaughlin has studied ideas on creativity in life.

Throughout life, we learn with our senses, we reach goals, and once we have reached a goal, we move on to the next. Life progresses and we work less with our creative minds and more with the fear of failure, McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin hopes she inspires people to take away a new idea, or an old idea with a new person saying it. “I want them to have the understanding that we need to change something in school. It is okay to feel fear, but face it.”

McLaughlin will discuss the reasons our minds slowly lose the creativity we had as children, and plans to include information and quotes from well-known inventors and philosophers, such as Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison.

McLaughlin hopes others will share her desire to change how we learn things as we age. “Some people might feel it’s important, and that’s what I hope for.”

Pickett is the director, producer and director of photography of the film, and says she learned to become a filmmaker in order to make this film.

Pickett’s film chronicles a century of theatrical skating, from Berlin’s Charlotte, to America’s Ice Follies, Ice Capades, Holiday on Ice, and the Sonja Henie shows, illustrating how those programs dominated live entertainment for decades. The film features never-before-seen footage, photos and rare archival material of a handful of skaters, producers and entrepreneurs. Starting in America with the Hippodrome and hotel shows and big arenas, the film also portrays how Holiday on Ice brought skating to Europe, behind the Iron Curtain, to Asia, Africa and South America, places where ice had never been seen before. The film also depicts the work of skater Roy Blakely to keep the history of theatrical skating alive.

Pickett is an award-winning photographer based in Minneapolis whose work has been exhibited and published nationally and internationally. Her journalistic work focuses primarily on human-interest feature stories and environmental portraits. Her photography has appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers, including People, Time, Life, Geo, Parenting, Christianity Today, the Los Angeles Times, the Boston Globe, Der Spiegel, and numerous others. She is the author of three books of photography, including Saving Body & Soul: The Mission of Mary Jo Copeland; FAERIE: Visions, Voices & Pretty Dresses; and Love in the 90s: BB and Jo, The Story of a Lifelong Love: A Granddaughter’s Portrait.

She is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts photography fellowship, a Minnesota State Arts Board grant, three Jerome Foundation grants, and three McKnight Foundation photography fellowships.

The Fabulous Ice Age is featured in April issues of Skating Magazine and Minnesota Monthly. Reviews of the movie, articles and interviews with Pickett are accessible from the film’s website: www.fabulousiceage.com.
